Unboxing & Setup

The Xiaomi Mini LED Gaming Monitor G Pro 27i comes in a brown cardboard container with the product well-identified. The print is a little hard to see because it’s in white, but all the details are available on the box. When you open it up, you’ll find the monitor and all its parts wrapped up carefully with styrofoam and other packaging materials. I thought everything was very secure and there was very little chance of the monitor being damaged.

Getting the monitor set up is very easy — especially if you have assembled monitors before. The stand is in two pieces — the base and the arm. The base screws into the arm of the stand and then the monitor attaches to the head of the arm. Xiaomi provides all the hardware needed for assembly and within about 5 minutes of unboxing all the pieces, the monitor is ready to use.

Before I even plugged the monitor into a host device, I noticed that there were two features I really liked and one I didn’t. Starting with the bad, the monitor only comes with a DisplayPort cable. Fortunately, I had a spare HDMI 2.0 cable available, but it would be very nice if the main types of cables used for connection were included with the monitor. I know that the price point of this monitor is in the ‘budget’ category, but throwing an HDMI cable into the package would be very nice for the end user.

Now, for the features I really liked. The monitor is powered by a simple 65W power adapter. Its size is similar to what you would find with a laptop and not a giant power supply with a detachable power cable. When trying to set up a workstation, those power bricks are incredibly difficult to work with, and finding that this monitor had a simple power adapter/cable was refreshing. The other feature that caught my eye was the built-in cable run in the stand. This is very helpful when it comes to managing cables. It’s not a huge channel, but I haven’t had a problem with routing the power and HDMI cables through it.

Evaluation

When it comes to testing monitors, we typically look at their features and say whether or not the monitor does in fact have that feature or benefit. Then we will watch some media (usually from a streaming service), and use the EIZO Monitor test to evaluate the quality of the picture on the monitor.

Looking at the main features of the monitor, it does offer a resolution of 2560 x 1440 as advertised. With HDMI 2.0, I was able to achieve a 120Hz refresh rate on the monitor and everything I viewed was very smooth. On one video I watched on YouTube, there was a little bit of tear when it came to fine lines but it was very minimal. Colors were vibrant and with a peak brightness of 1000 nits, the Mini LED monitor does a great job of pushing out dynamic visuals. I actually bumped the brightness up to 100% and then turned on HDR. That took it to a whole other level.

The EIZO monitor test has 13 levels of tests that provide visual assessments of the following areas:

• Brightness and contrast
• Sharpness
• Color accuracy
• Gamma and gradient
• Response time
• Uniformity
• Pixel testing

I ran through each level and didn’t find any problems with the Xiaomi Mini LED Gaming Monitor G Pro 27i and those tests. There are more precise testing options that rely on specialized equipment. For this type of review, I feel that the EIZO test along with the real-world experiential testing is adequate.

In addition to the EIZO test and viewing high-resolution video on the monitor, I also played through a couple of rounds of Call of Duty: Mobile to check out how well it did with movement. I was able to achieve a 60Hz refresh rate by connecting my iPad Pro to the monitor (Apple locks the output refresh rate to external monitors to 60Hz to preserve battery life) and the visuals of the game were really good. It wasn’t as good as 120Hz would be, which would give me 120fps in the game, but it was playable, and aside from action not appearing quite as smooth as normal, I thought the monitor still did a great job with the first-person shooter.

While this monitor does not provide a 4K resolution, the clarity of the text, brightness, and color gamut really sing for a monitor at this price point. That paired with the excellent build quality really makes the Xiaomi Mini LED Gaming Monitor G Pro 27i a winner in my book.
