Apple iPhone technology is evolving at a fast rate, but will it reach a point where iPhones can’t improve any further? Click here to read what the future holds.

To most ordinary people, the smartphone that you currently hold in your hand would seem like the work of science fiction a mere decade ago. These days, we’re so used to having the most up-to-date technology at our fingertips that it’s hard to stop and think about how incredible it is that so much can be done on this small device that you keep in your pocket.

Phones are no longer mere items meant to make and receive calls with; they are multifunctional devices used to make payment transactions, take photographs with, listen to music, browse the internet, tell the time, and much, much more. It’s generally considered that today’s smartphone is far more powerful than the mainframe computers used in NASA’s Apollo 11 for the moon landings.

Furthermore, smartphones are constantly being updated. Apple’s iPhone13 features the world’s fastest Bionic chip, making it more powerful than its predecessor, the iPhone12. What’s more, Apple is anticipated to launch its iPhone 14 in September 2022, which will presumably be more efficient than the 13. But will iPhones reach a point where they cannot be improved?

Current features

There is no doubt that the iPhone is a slick device. Built-in apps include Camera, Translate, Weather, News, iTunes, Books, Health, and many, many more. But it can do much more than that. Most iPhone users will have downloaded the usual popular apps, such as Google, Facebook, and YouTube among others, but there are always new, updated apps coming out to be explored.

Unsurprisingly, iPhones are also great for gaming. Gone are the days of portable hand-held games consoles. Most people, when not at home, now get their gaming fix on their smartphone. It’s not unusual to see users playing games, such as Texas Hold’em on GGPoker on their phone while on the morning commute, nor is it a surprise to see gamers out and about playing on augmented reality (AR) apps, such as Pokemon Go.

Room for improvement?

Despite being packed with up-to-date technology, smartphones do lack in some areas. While your phone might be able to do the most high-tech and complex operations, it can, and does, sometimes fail at the most basic level.

We’ve all experienced the annoyance of having an important call while travelling on the train, only for the phone to cut out when you go through a tunnel. Mobile phone signals struggle to pass through certain structures, causing blind coverage in some places, which is an inconvenience and definitely something that can be made better.

Getting better?

While smartphones do have their drawbacks in terms of coverage, they are certainly evolving in what they can do in other areas. The camera installed in the iPhone, for instance, is well-known for its high quality. Not only are exposure and colour balance usually on point in most situations, but later iPhone models also have the camera technology to self-adjust.

But how many more features can Apple add to the iPhone to make it even better? According to the rumours, the iPhone SE model expected for release in 2023 will have a larger display and more memory space than its predecessor. It can therefore be presumed that any new improvements in the near future would be in storage and screen size, as well as camera quality.

The end of the iPhone?

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that iPhones will become obsolete by 2032 due to AR. The top industry insider says that Apple will replace their iPhone with AR technology goggles and that the success of these will depend on the method of detachment from the iPhone.

Assuming iPhones continue to evolve at the current rate of at least three upgraded models a year, will they eventually hit a point where they can’t get any better? It’s unclear exactly what the future holds, but one thing is certain – the Apple iPhone will continue to improve at least for a few years to come.
