As previously stated in our article, iPhone Launch Campout, I was a recent convert to Verizon wireless. Joining my boyfriend’s wireless plan, we share everything, including data. Being that I came from a plan where I had unlimited data and he had a large amount of data on his own, we have been carefully monitoring our data usage. We were astonished to find that his data usage was through the roof registering over 1GB of data on his own. This was only after one week of having our new iPhones. The most disturbing part of this issue is that he spends most of his data time on WiFi at our home.

NOTE: There are also some iPhone 4S and iPad users who have updated to iOS 6 who are also experiencing similar issues. 

Upon further review and research, we discovered that we were not the only ones having this issue. Apple issued its first software update which, “resolves an issue in which, under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.” (Apple)

If you are having a similar problem, go to Settings > General > About and you should see a prompt on the screen similar to what is pictured. This update was released on September 30, 2012.

Another note of interest, after we discovered this update, we contact Verizon about a possible credit to our account because of the glitch. We were given a $10 credit to our account for this month’s bill. If you have experienced this problem, I would urge you to contact Verizon to see if they will credit your account, too. It’s completely justified due to the carrier setting issue.
