With all of the available charging tech on the market, we now have the option to choose more than a boring/ugly charging dock. When companies vie for our desk real estate, we need them to provide an attractive yet minimalistic, quick charging experience. Luckily, ventev provided a very enticing option with the Ventev Wireless chargepad +. The chargepad arrived in a vibrant 5 3/4 inches wide by 5 3/4 inches tall by 1 3/4 inches thick retail package. The safety-cone colored orange rim provided a nice frame around the two attractive cover images an verbal details. Along your top left, you can expect to find the white title, “Fast wireless charging” in dark orange and Qi compatibility with Sony/LG/Motorola/Nokia, Apple Fast Charge and Samsung Wireless Charge. The orange “Ventev” title was proudly displayed along the bottom left and 7.5/10W output was labeled on the bottom right corner. The dark slate-grey backdrop contrasted beautifully with the white/orange fonts and with the product images. To your left, you will find a 2 1/2 inch long image of a grey puck style wireless pad with a fabric-styled cover. To your right, you will find an image displaying the wallport charger and a see-through phone upon a charging base. The reverse panel provided many of the same features as the cover, providing the orange “ventev” title, product name, and list of compatibilities. The 2 1/2 inches long image was very similar to the see-through image on the cover. The best aspect of the rear panel was the discovery that the device utilized USB-C.
Returning to the cover, lift the front magnetic flap and enjoy two attractive panels. The slate-grey inner flap contained three orange colored ink outline icons detailing the fast wallport charger, 5ft USB-A to USB-C cable and the fast charging pad. Looking to the right, I was excited to see a faux wood-grain panel desktop. I was even more excited to see the actual surface of the charger on the desktop, behind a clear plastic window. I applaud ventev for utilizing the clear panel, as it provided a realistic, stylized product display. Essentially, you get an up close and personal real-life view of the charger. Remove the tape from the top of the box, and slide the thin plastic tray out of the packaging. Within the form cut wells, you will find a 1 5/8 inches wide by 2 1/16 inches long by 7/8 inches thick charging brick, and the 3 1/2 inch diameter by 3/8 inches thick, tweed fabric covered charging puck. Hidden beneath the puck, the company provided a round style 60 inches long (5 feet) USB-A to USB-C cable, which was more than generous. The puck had four useful antistick feet along the bottom, a USB C input port along the back and a blue LED along the front. Hidden along the face of the charger, I found a cryptic silver-colored “ventev” title and beneath the charger, the same charging specifications as seen on the prong-end of the wallport charger.
To utilize this device, simply plug the charging block into a wall outlet/surge protector, plug the USB-A end into the charging brick and then the USB-C prong into the charging puck. To test the rate of charging, I plugged a DROK USB-C multimeter, in line, into the USB-A port on the outlet and then the USB-A end of the cable into the DROK USB-C multimeter. I placed my iPhone XS Max upon the puck and found the multimeter read 5V/1.16A output. Starting at 11:05 PM at 35%, I rechecked my iPhone XS Max, inside a clear Moshi case, 10 minutes later and found my iPhone to be at 40%. After a series of tests, I found that the phone gained about 5% power every 10 minutes or roughly 1% power every 2 minutes. This would work perfectly for an overnight charge, during a business meeting or for those times you may be sitting at your desk. I wish that Apple phones could utilize 10W charging. Unfortunately, iPhones do not have the same charging capabilities as some of their Android brethren. Thus, if you are interested in the maximal possible charge, we remain forced to tether our devices via lightning cable. Having tested numerous wireless devices, I can attest that this device will charge your iPhone 8/8S/X or the XS/XS Max/XR at the maximal rate possible for an iPhone, at 7.5W.
The first issue that I had with the device was with the charging brick. Living in a modern, tech-heavy world, many homes have multiple outlets that remain unused, whereas others create overloaded circuits. When we are forced to play the ire-inducing game of wall outlet tech-Tetris, some people may choose another product. I loved the look of the puck, the feel of the puck and that they chose to use a USB-C charging kit. The inclusion of a five-foot USB-A to USB-C cable was an added bonus, but it should have been colored to match the puck, should have been flat or should have had a weave/textured appearance. Since the wallport charger was capable of 100-240V, 50-60Hz, 0.5A input and was capable of output at 5V/3A, 9V/2A or 12V/1.5A, USB-C likely did not provide much beyond the capabilities of USB-A to USB-micro delivery. I wish that the large brick was built in-line and not at the plug end. Imagine a charging block similar to the Xbox charger, where the smaller type A or B wall plug was at the end, and the adaptor was upstream. I did not experience any overheating while charging my phone and happily had a fully charged phone in about 2-3 hours (depending on where I started). Despite the attractive appearance of the ventev charger on my Nook Desk, it is hard for me to replace my ventev wireless chargestand.
