A clever, modern way to handle communication.
Many years ago, I created a website. It was through a service called Geocities and it was backed by Yahoo! It was a decent attempt at web design but wasn’t as functional as sites are today. It took me hours to build and within a few months, it was outdated. At that point in time, technology didn’t move quite as fast and the lifespan of your average website was a bit longer. That said, when it came time for me to make updates, it was just too time-consuming. Websites come together much quicker these day but still require some finesse. What if you just wanted to make a basic site for the purposes of being able to have people contact you? This is where Universe comes in.
Universe is a mobile app for building websites. The entire process is contained on your iPhone and literally within 90 seconds, you can have a custom website of your own. The app is free and you have the ability to build a totally free, single page website. Developer, Future Lab, Inc., refers to them as ‘lightweight’ websites. When you are done creating a site, you have a fully functional, one-page website. You can include links to other sites, social media pages, and contact links as well as add images, video, and even custom graphics.
[box] We created Universe because we realized that despite the rise of mobile internet consumption, there was no mobile app to help consumers create their own sites. Since launching, we’ve discovered that people who would never make a website are now creating sites on Universe. The diversity of sites created is astonishing.[/box]
As promised by the app description, Universe is very, very easy to use. When you first open the app, you are met with the Magic Builder, which helps you build a site by simply asking a few questions like “What kind of site do you want to make — personal or business?” and “What’s your name?” From the responses you give, the app will generate a lightweight website. You can move objects around, but you are limited to a 5 x 3 grid, which fits a standard iPhone screen. You can view the website through any web browser — not just your phone. Universe gives you a free URL, which is tied to their brand (robyn.onuniverse.com), but you do have the option to upgrade to a custom URL for a price (starting at $2.99).
I found the process quick and easy. I like the idea of a lightweight website for some uses. For example, you can create a simple contact page for yourself and essentially have a digital business card. Since you can link out to other websites, you can also treat it as a professional portfolio. Or if you are hosting an event through your place of business and want to have a custom site for registration, you can create a simple landing page through Universe and link out to the larger database where people would actually register. It’s really quite a clever, modern way to handle communication. It doesn’t take a programmer to build a site when you use Universe.
