Case provides unstoppable protection for new iPad Pro.
When I got the brand new 2020 iPad Pro I knew that I would need a protective case for it since Apple delayed the release of the Smart Keyboard. I immediately turned to UAG and their Metropolis case series of products. The writers at MacSources (myself included) have had wonderful success with the Metropolis case for both the iPad and iPhone. It’s a great case with a lot of strong features. I was excited to hear that UAG developed it for the newest 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
The Metropolis Series iPad Pro 12.9” Case provides sleek silhouettes and 360-degree protection for the iPad Pro. It has a rugged, non-slip exterior that highlights UAG’s commitment to protection without added bulk to devices. The case has an adjustable stand with an auto wake/sleep folio cover and an Apple Pencil holder that is compatible with the Apple Pencil Pairing/Charging function. It’s important to note that this case is not compatible with the Smart Keyboard Folio or Magic Keyboard. Even though the case does not provide waterproof protection, the case’s non-slip exterior is water resistant. The case has been tested to uphold military drop-test standards (cases have been dropped 26 times at 48 inches with zero damage done to the device).

As it turns out, I’ve quite a bit of experience with the Metropolis series cases. When I knew that I would need a case to keep my precious new iPad safe, I didn’t hesitate to seek this amazing case out from UAG. A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to try the Metropolis out with the 1st Gen 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the case hasn’t actually left the device since. One of the best features of the 1st Gen Metropolis case was that it was detachable and therefore compatible with the Smart Keyboard from Apple. This was probably the biggest perk of the case and what made me love it so much.
Unfortunately, that feature did not carry over to this case. The cover of the Metropolis for the 4th Gen iPad Pro wraps around the screen and mimics the iPhone case precisely. Now, part of the reason I needed protection for my iPad Pro early was because the keyboards from Apple won’t be available for another month or so and I simply didn’t want to leave it naked for so long. That said, I do plan on acquiring a keyboard when they are released and at that point, I sadly won’t be able to use this case anymore.
Something else I noticed right away was the weight. According to the specs, the case is 17 ounces, which adds nearly an entire pound to the weight of the iPad Pro, which is already a pound and a half. I’m sure that there are many other cases that add more weight, but given how slim the case is, I was surprised at how noticeable the weight difference was. Despite the weight, the case operates very nicely. The adjustable stand is quite sturdy. There are a few angles to use including options for viewing videos, reading, and typing on the screen.
Even though it might seem that I have had a lot of complaints about this case, I’m just being nit-picky. The case is a very strong protector for the iPad Pro. It fits extremely well and is easy to install. I love that it has a magnetic closure that ensures the screen is covered when it’s not in use. I did expect the case to be a deeper color red based on the photos provided on UAG’s website. It is actually a bright red rather than a darker cranberry shade that I was expecting. It wasn’t really a disappointment, but it was a surprise.
The Metropolis case for the iPad Pro is a great accessory for an exceptional device. While I was hoping for something that might work with a future keyboard, it does a great job at protecting the tablet. The case is stylish and very easy to use. My hope is that it continues to hold up and that UAG continues to evolve and develop this case for future models of the iPhone and iPad.
