Charging portability is in style with TimePorter for Apple Watch.

I love Twelve South. They make some really unique products for Apple devices. One of their new products happened to be released today and fortunately, I’ve had the opportunity to test it out before its release. When I first got my hands on it I thought, “This is a sunglasses case with a new liner and a hole cut out in the top.” But, I quickly found out that it’s much more then that. It’s actually a stylish, easy-to-use travel case for your Apple Watch and accessories.

Twelve South TimePorter for Apple Watch REVIEW

TimePorter was announced by Twelve South last month and has been designed to become essential travel gear for Apple Watch owners everywhere. Not only does it serve users as a storage case for your Apple Watch and its accessories, but it also works as a charging and viewing stand. The case is wrapped with soft black or white luxury leather. I personally, prefer the black as I think it shows off my Stainless Steel Apple Watch nicely.

Because Apple has been pretty stingy with allowing third party companies to make charging devices for the Apple Watch, you’re still limited to using your own charging cable. This is a limitation that companies like Twelve South have to work around to make accessories that are useful in everyday life. I think they did a great job at making a product that’s light weight and easy to take along with you anywhere you go. TimePorter’s design allows you to have the option to place items inside the case like an extra watch band, thumb drive, charging brick, or small battery.

One of the more unique aspect of the TimePorter is that it has custom hinges that allow the case to open up to a 180 degrees so that it will lay flat. This is great because something I always struggle with is the fact that glasses cases tend to flip or wobble when open on a flat surface. Twelve South took that into consideration with the design and made it easier for users to access their belongings with a flat, open case.

A concern that I had with this case was that it might fall open if placed in a laptop bag or briefcase. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Twelve South also designed a clever hidden magnetic closure in the case to keep your belongings secure when traveling. I’ve found that the magnetic closure has a very strong contact point and the case will not open unless you pry the sides of the case apart.

Looking at the inside of the case, the lining is made from a soft silicone material, which is great as a resting place for your Apple Watch if you choose to store it there. The lining has a wonderful wrap-around piece for your excess cable to route around. I found that with a standard 1 meter charging cable from Apple, the cable will wrap around twice with about two and half inches left to stick out one of the ends for connection to a battery or wall plug. When you don’t need to charge, you can push your charging puck through the top hole so that it is stored on the inside of the case. There is a soft silicone plug that folds back when the charging puck is in use. This plug can also fill in the charging hole for travel. I was very impressed by how easy it was to install the cable and charging puck in its port. Some cable management systems are very tough and are designed to be more permanent. This one is designed for portability and versatility. So, you can use it how you need to when you need to.

I love that Twelve South designed this from one of the most carried items in the world – the glasses case. So many people have their glasses with them everywhere they go and a case to keep them protected. By using an already familiar design, it makes it easy for users to feel comfortable carrying it around as it doesn’t feel like it’s something else they have to drag around. It just feels right. TimePorter is also slimmer than most glasses cases so slipping it into your back pocket or inside your jacket will be very easy.

So the question you’re waiting for me to answer is – is it worth it? My answer is yes. When it comes to an item like the Apple Watch that you spend a great deal to own, you might as well get the best tools to use with it. When on the go, I find I might deplete my battery and the TimePorter will be there for me with an option to get my watch power.
