A luxury case for your laptop.
Many years ago, I was introduced to accessories by Twelve South. They are a luxury accessory company that designs companion products for Apple devices. About 5 years ago, I reviewed their iPhone case called the ‘Book Book’. It’s a leather wallet case for the Apple smartphone that is designed to look like a small book. I was really taken with the design of the case and ever since I’ve been hooked on Twelve South’s products. They just have a wonderful way of creating products that work well for customers. One of the most recent products I’ve had the opportunity of trying out is the Journal for MacBook. I have a 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro and I love having the option to protect the computer while making it look professional so the Journal case was a natural choice for me.
This case is designed exclusively for use with Apple’s MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. It’s a luxury leather case made with full-grain leather sourced from New Zealand. The leather undergoes a tedious six-step, semi-vegetable tanning treatment. It’s considered between for the environment and includes an oil and wax treatment that makes the Journal water and UV resistant. It’s a minimal case that will develop a natural patina over time. There are dual-zippers and a micro-suede lining to protect your computer. Twelve South included a hidden document compartment that can hold a few sheets of paper comfortably.
The Journal came in a simple cardboard wrapping. This wrapping is a budget-friendly option for retail as it clearly shows the product on the cover along with some very basic details of the product itself. The leather case/cover has a zippered closure with a double zipper-pull on either side of the cover. From the outside of the case, it looks like a luxury, leather-bound book or portfolio. It’s gorgeous and has the appearance of a very exclusive carrying case.
When you open it up, you will find the soft cloth covering that helps to protect your laptop from scratches. There is a small hidden compartment beneath the base of where the laptop sits that is designed to hold a few papers so that you can travel from place to place without having to carry multiple items. While this is a nice feature, I would rather see the Journal tailored a bit better for the laptop itself.
This particular model is designed for the new (late 2018) 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2016 but the size specs (from Apple) are exactly the same as the most recent MBP release. With that in mind, my laptop should also be a ‘perfect fit’ for the Journal case. While the case fits perfectly when it’s closed, I found some issues with the lid of the laptop staying attached to the opening of the Journal. There are two elastic bands that are supposed to hold the corners in place, but when you open the lid, the straps barely cover the edges of the laptop’s lid. This became an issue for me when I was trying to use the laptop on-the-go. The top of the Journal would continually fall off the laptop and make it very difficult for me to use the case comfortably.
I would love to see Twelve South modify the interior of the Journal just a bit so that the lid of the laptop was more securely place within the Journal but aside from that, this is a wonderful case and companion for the MacBook Pro. It features gorgeous craftsmanship and a sleek design that really shows off the technology that lies inside.
