This Week in Tech News – Steve Jobs featured on a stamp, Samsung releases updated smart watch, WhatsApp sells to Facebook and HP launches two new tablets.
Steve Jobs Stamp
Several celebrities and iconic figures are in consideration for 2015 special edition US Postal Stamps, including Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs. Some of the other figures include John Lennon, Charlton Heston and the fictional character, Dora the Explorer. Jobs, if chosen, would be the first person from the computer/technology industry to be featured on a stamp. A 12-member Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee recommends 35 new subjects for commemorative stamps each year to the postmaster general, who makes the final decision.
Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo
Samsung has confirmed that it will release a new smart watch when the Mobile World Congress kicks off on Monday. Samsung Gear 2 along with the Gear 2 Neo around planned to start coming on in April. No pricing deals have been released as of yet. Since the release of the original Gear, there have been several smart watches to hit the market including the Pebble and the MetaWatch.
WhatsApp Sale to Facebook
On Saturday, Feb 22, Facebook purchased mobile messaging app, WhatsApp for $19 billion. The five-year old app has approximately 450 million users and continues to add a million per day. Unfortunately, within days of the acquisition, WhatsApp experienced an outage for more than three hours. Atributed to ‘server issues,’ Facebook referred questions to WhatsApp representatives who did not immediately respond.
HP Launches Elite Pad Tablet
Hewlett-Packard launched a new ElitePad 1000 that runs Windows 8.1. ElitePad 1000 is designed to bridge personal and professional use. The tablet will be available in mid-March and is starts at $739. HP also announced the arrival of ProPad 660, a lower priced tablet.
