Never be without your readers again
As we get older, we tend to miss the things that we once were able to do. For some of us, it may be sports for others it may be the ability to hear or even to see. As a family medicine physician and a son to parents and grandparents who need reading glasses, I see firsthand the need for assistive devices. Going out to dinner with family, I often see people struggling to read the menu as they have forgotten their glasses. My wife has a pair in her nightstand and another in her car, as without her contacts she is essentially blind. Having the gift of good vision, I cannot imagine the dread you would feel not having glasses.
At CES 2016, while in Las Vegas, Nevada, I learned about a company who is trying to make a difference regarding the above problem, ThinOPTICS. Teddy Shalon, CEO of ThinOPTICS, was on a long bike ride with a friend who had forgotten his glasses. His friend was unable to read a text message on his phone, requiring someone else to read it to him. We have all zoomed in our phones. It will make the text bigger, but we sacrifice the ability to see the bigger picture, more information. Mr. Shalon came up with the idea to put reading glasses on to those objects we carry with us all the time, our phones. The company has designed a “Stick Anywhere… Go Everywhere” product, that can be with you when you need them. The goal was to create a device that comfortably works with everyone. Combining biomedical knowledge with tech, the company merged bulletproof polycarbonate lenses with the same flexible metal that keeps the arteries in hearts open, the stents. Over a 30 month period, they tested a variety of different prototypes until they found the perfect fit for all noses.
The product includes a pair of glasses, in the most common optical strengths +1.5 (low), +2.0 (medium) and +2.50 (high), and a universal glasses pod. Each of the optical strengths will cover 0.25 above and below the number. This covers most of the spectrum, allowing this device to work for just about everyone who uses reading glasses. The lenses have no ear loops, relying on a gentle pressure at the nose bridge. They will remain in place quite well for normal reading and light activity. They are not designed to stay in place for heavier duty activity.
Through their site at thinoptics.com, you can see testimonials, learn more about the product and order them directly. They stand behind their product, offering free replacement glasses forever. They have aThis does not cover damage through accident/misuse or use through normal wear and tear but does guarantee that through normal use, they will last. The glasses are available in a variety of colors: Crystal clear, jet black, azure blue, ruby red, amethyst purple, espresso brown. You can also pick between a black case and a clear case. The glasses and case combo weighs about 0.6 ounces and the glasses alone weigh 0.1 ounces. The case is rugged enough to slide into your pocket for use anytime. The real strength is that it has a strong adhesive backing that you can attach to your phone or case, your kindle, or to your tablet. It is not compatible with textured, silicone or rubber surfaces. If you need a replacement strip you can order free strips at www.thinoptics.com.
To use the device, tug upwards on the bridge to remove from the case. Flex open the lenses. The range/bending of these is quite extreme, showcasing the quality of the product. Place the device onto your nose from the tip to the bridge. You have the freedom to determine what works best for you. They are reversible, without front or back. It does not matter which direction you place them onto your nose. To reinstall the device into the holster, slide one lens in and then the bridge. If you do not want the small sticky holster, you can buy an actual case with the lens holder built into the case. Make sure you choose the appropriate case for your smartphone.
I was given the +1.5 version of the lenses to test. Both my wife and I found that these were incredibly comfortable and if placed low enough onto the nose, you could almost us them as bifocals. By looking through the lenses, you maintain a good distance vision and by looking down and through the lenses, you can get good up close vision as well. We each left them on and read for about 30 minutes. Not being a glasses wearer, I was concerned that I would get fatigued or have pain at the place where the lenses attached to my nose. This was not the case. I was impressed with how light they felt. The polycarbonate lenses are really clear. You can clean them just like you would regular glasses lenses. For my wife, a regular contact/glasses user, these were comfortable as she notes they did not press on the temple or pull on the ear. She liked this feature of the glasses. I believe that this company has a winning product and rate it at 5/5 stars.
