A great all-around bag for photographers.
Over the past year, I’ve been searching for the ideal photographer’s backpack. For my purposes, I have just found that a backpack with flexible dividers tends to work best. That said, my backpack isn’t quite conducive to a quick photography getaway. When I want to grab my camera and go, I want to make sure it’s protected, but sometimes I don’t want to haul around 10 pounds of gear with it. So, I sought out a simple shoulder bag from Think Tank Photo.
The Spectral 15 Shoulder Bag from Think Tank Photo is a gorgeous, lightweight multipurpose camera bag. It’s made from tarpaulin, a heavy-duty, waterproof cloth, which is durable and very functional and metal hardware, YKK RC Fuse zippers, 420D velocity nylon. In addition to the main compartment, which can fit a full-frame DSLR body and at least two lenses, the Spectral 15 also has a pocket for a 15-inch laptop and a pocket for a 10-inch tablet. The bag also has tripod attachment points and straps. One of the most interesting design features of the bag is the magnetic Fidlock clasp. It’s quiet and enables one-handed access to the interior of the bag. You pull down to release the lock and it locks automatically when you close the flap. The interior pouch is protected by a zippered cover and Think Tank Photo includes a seam-sealed rain cover, too.
As I mentioned above, one of the main reasons that I was intrigued by this style bag is because it was easy to load and unload gear. I actually had a great opportunity for a user experience within the past couple of weeks because I took a trip to Florida. Part of my motivation for taking this trip was to get some great photographs. With that in mind, I packed as many accessories as I could since I would be gone for a week. In addition to my Canon 5D Mark IV camera body, I also had the following lenses as well as backup batteries.
- Sigma 70-200mm
- Canon 50mm
- Canon L Lens 24-105mm
- Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6
When traveling down to Florida (a 13+ hour drive), I packed many of my accessories, including my 9.7-inch iPad Pro, in the Spectral 15 for safe keeping. My camera body and lenses were tucked away in my camera backpack. As soon as we arrived, we wanted to hit the beach and I immediately switched gear into the Spectral 15. It was much easier to tote around with my Canon 5D Mark IV with the Canon 24-105mm lens attached and a second lens in tow. The Spectral 15 is a very comfortable bag to carry around. I didn’t find myself having any shoulder strain the entire time I was using the Spectral 15 in Florida. I love how easy it was to use and how well the bag kept my gear protected especially from the sand. I got caught in the rain a few times as well and the bag stayed dry with the help of its rain cover.
I quickly fell in love with the Spectral 15. When I acquired it, I thought it would be adequate for my needs, but I was pleasantly surprised at what I found with it. It’s not only a great photographer’s companion bag, but it’s also a wonderful accessory bag. I can recommend this bag to any photographer looking for a good shoulder bag.
