Thermodo is a tiny, electrical thermometer for your mobile device.
Thermodo comes from pretty humble beginnings. Its was born from an idea caused by an app user error. The app was called Thermo and it is a temperature app that shows users the temperature outdoors. Even though there were a lot of happy customers, one specific unhappy customer made the team at Robocat think,” What if the app could tell you the temperature wherever you are?” And the concept for Thermodo was born.
Thermodo is a tiny electrical thermometer that works with your mobile device to tell you the temperature where you are. It’s made of passive temperature sensor that is built into a standard 4-pole audio jack. This is a great addition to the growing list of products that utilize the audio jack on mobile phones. So, how does Thermodo get a temperature reading to your phone? According to Robocat’s description on its successful Kickstarter page, “Thermodo sends an audio signal through the temperature sensor. This sensor will then attenuate the signal amplitude depending on the actual temperature. This attenuation can now be detected on the microphone input and through software we calculate the corresponding temperature.” For the end user, you simply plug in Thermodo to your headphone jack and open the accompanying app.
Thermodo is quite small. It only weighs 7 grams and is just under 1.5 inches long. Part of its design includes a keychain attachment so that you can carry it with you everywhere. The tiny thermometer also has an optional extension cord, which is highly recommended by this reviewer. There are a lot of elements that can ‘pollute’ your temperature reading and the extension cord can assist by removing the Thermodo from predictable heat sources.
As it turns out, I had an interesting event happen that allowed me to test the Thermodo in a real setting. A few days after installing a Nest Learning Thermostat into a rental house I own, the tenant called me and said that no heat was being pushed through the vents. In order to find out what was going on, we spent almost three hours troubleshooting with a technician at Nest. During that time, I was using my Thermodo to report temperature changes or lack thereof in the room and with the air coming out of the vents. As it turns out, the issue ended up being a setting that had been set incorrectly, and once it was reset, warm air began flowing from the vents in the house. I continued to monitor the temperature of the air coming from the vents using Thermodo to make sure that it was indeed staying warm.
Thermodo is a great device that I think everyone should own. There are two versions – Thermodo and Premium Thermodo. The Thermodo ($29.99) is made from Aluminum and boasts a midnight automotive grade paint job along with a hand-stamped logo. The Premium Thermodo ($44.99) is made from anodized aluminum with electrode erosion engraved logos. Both versions are equally sturdy and stylish.
Thermodo is a great addition to any mobile phone arsenal. It works with iOS and Android devices and is a wonderfully accurate thermometer.
