Square Reader receives more efficient, thinner redesign for the holidays.
Today, Square announced the launch of its new Square Reader design. This newer design is nearly 45 percent thinner than the original making it at thin as an iPhone. In addition to the exterior, Square overhauled the interior as well. The read head – the sensor that grabs the data from a credit card – has been redesigned, too. A custom chip was also created to run all of Square’s data interpretation, encryption and transfer functions. Previously, there were dozens of components within a Square Reader that accomplished the jobs that this one chip now does.
This design marks the official fourth generation of the Square Reader. The Square Reader is available on Square’s website today and will be available in retail stores in 2014.
