Smart Body Analyzer helps to achieve health goals through automation.
Two years ago, smart health device company, Withings launched the Smart Body Analyzer, a bathroom scale that does so much more than measure your weight. Withings is the developer of the first Internet-connected scale and with the Smart Body Analyzer, they have introduced the world to a smart scale that is capable of measuring weight, heart rate and air quality, all things that contribute to the overall picture of a person’s health.
I am very interested in digital automation and mobile connectivity. In addition to that, I am in need of losing weight. I have found over the years that stepping on a regular bathroom scale doesn’t help me except to tell my weight at that exact moment. I can know what my weight is, but I don’t write it down or capture it by logging it on an app. This is one HUGE reason the Smart Body Analyzer caught my eye.
This year, I’ve really been taking an active look at my health and love that this product can capture several different readings and send that data directly to an app on my phone. I have become very fond of finding products that allow this sort of interaction – for example, the Kinsa Smart Thermometer. It has a similar data collection method and keeps the data safe until I need to access it again. This process also makes me be more interested in seeing the data change – i.e. losing weight – so that there is progress shown on the app.
In addition to the Smart Body Analyzer connecting and automatically adding data to my iPhone, it also works with Apple’s HealthKit and records data into the Health app on my iPhone. Therefore, it’s data will coordinate with any other records I push to that app so that I have the most accurate picture of my health as possible.
Now that I’ve described why I like the Smart Body Analyzer, I would like to discuss some of the other wonderful features of the device.
- Position Control Technology: the scale has a best-in class weighing technology to ensure accuracy.
- Fat mass measurement: this is available in both athlete and non-athlete modes
- Heart rate measurement: allows the tracking of the resting heart rate by simply stepping on the scale.
- Air quality measurement: CO2 and temperature monitoring to better control and manage air quality. High levels of CO2 can produce a lot of adverse health effects such as the deterioration of sleep quality, headaches, dizziness, restlessness, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, sweating, etc. By keeping a measure of air quality, people can live and sleep better.
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, Bluetooth Smart and Wi-Fi for easy setup and hassle-free data upload
- Multiple user support: the Smart Body Analyzer will allow for up to 8 users – each has their own account protected by a password, so that all data stays personal and confidential.
With so many different features and health options being measured, you might think this is a difficult device to use. Nope. It’s as simple as stepping on the scale. There is a very simple process to set up the scale on your iOS or Android device within just a few taps on the screen. Once it is set up, a user only needs to step up to be weighed and the scale measures the weight and resting heart rate (provided the user is bare-footed) and then submits the data automatically to the Withings Health Mate app on your mobile device. Once in the app, users can see weight, BMI (Body Mass Index), fat mass, and heart rate. The app also shows recommended values for users based on values from the World Health Organization.
So, the big question is, “Has the Smart Body Analyzer helped me to lose weight and improve my health?” The answer is, “yes.” Since I have had the scale for testing, I have been more cognizant of my habits and have worked to ensure that I was including a consistent measurement of weight and heart rate so that my health data is accurate. My advice to anyone who is interested in acquiring this device to help measure your health trends is to include the Withings Blood Pressure Monitor in the purchase. This will only increase your knowledge of your health.
Also, make sure to weigh yourself at the same time every day you weigh. Your weight fluctuates throughout the day so it’s important to make note of when you weigh yourself so that your data is consistent. I would also recommend keeping the Withings app front and center on your device. Don’t bury it within a folder. I’ve found that by keeping the app on my home page that I’ve paid much more attention to it and it’s been a reminder of my goals.
I can highly recommend this to anyone looking to achieve better health and anyone who enjoys utilizing technology for automated tasks. The Withings Smart Body Analyzer retails for $149.95 (MSRP). It operates using 4 AA batteries and can be used on either hard flooring, like linoleum, or carpet.
