Discover the infographics all around you with Sitegeist.

One of my favorite new means of marketing is the use of infographics. Being a visual learner, it helps me to see the data as an image rather than just text sometimes. While modern infographics have become increasingly more popular over the past 5 years, the practice of presenting data in graphic form dates back to images drawn on caves by early man. Infographics allow us to easily see the trends and patterns of data systems. As I mentioned, this practice has become more and more popular as a means of spreading marketing material to the masses through social media. There are many options for creating free or inexpensive infographics thus making them easier to distribute.

sitegeist-infographicUnderstanding and uncovering the data around you is the mission of Sitegeist, an app that allows you to see the data of your location through an infographic. Utilizing data from various sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, Sitegeist gives users a total picture of an area. When you start the app, it, of course, request use of Location Services. After allowing the connection between that service and the app, Sitegeist completes an info graphic in five categories:

  • People
  • Housing
  • Fun
  • Environment
  • History

Each of those categories presents data on that area and credits the sources from which it pulled the data. There is also a sharing function to the app that allows infographics to be shared through Twitter, Facebook and Email. The Email option send the recipient a link to Sitegeist’s website where the infographic can be viewed. It does only share one category at a time.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know and reviewing this app. I happen to be an infographic geek and really enjoy the data presented. I also really liked the ability to reset the pin for your current location and get data on that area as well. This research tool could be used in a variety of different ways and I highly recommend it if you are looking to move to a new area, researching home values or just curious about your home town.

I could see future expansions of this app including additional history of locations to give people an idea of what peoples lived in the area generations ago.

Sitegeist is a free app available for download in the iTunes App Store. It is available for all iOS platforms and optimized for iPhone 5. Sitegeist is currently on version 1.1 and is developer by Sunlight Foundation.
