Over the past couple of years I have tested dozens of multiport adapters along with my mobile gaming set up, which includes an iPad Pro as it’s main device. Because the iPad only has one USB-C/Thunderbolt port on it, I had to use a multiport adapter or dock in order to connect to an external monitor, speakers, headphones, or Ethernet. User Experience
Satechi products have a classic retail-style box. There is always an image of the product on the front and info about the product on the back. The box for this multiport adapter was no different. When I opened the box I found the adapter and its user manual. The user manual is actually very helpful because it details what each port is and what they can do a bit better than the website diagrams do. The quick start guide can also be found online if it’s needed.
The multiport adapter is ready to go out of the box. There are no special software requirements or downloads needed for it to operate on your host machine. When I plugged it into my MacBook, I did have to give the computer permission to access the accessory, but that’s it. There is always a possibility that you will need to download a driver to use this with a Windows machine, but with a Mac-based device, I didn’t have any steps to take in order to use it.
The first test I did was just to connect the Satechi USB-C Multiport 8K Adapter with Ethernet V3 to my main machine and see if every port worked as it was designed. Everything worked just fine. The only limitation I found was with the iPad Pro’s output refresh rate. The native refresh rate for the iPad’s screen supports a refresh rate up to 120Hz with its ProMotion technology, but for external monitors, that is limited to 60Hz. This isn’t a fault of the adapter, but rather a limitation that Apple puts on the device itself. Other than that, I was able to get full operation from the other ports.
I did do a data speed test using a USB-C flash drive to test the speed of the ports on the adapter. I used a PNY 128GB Elite-X USB 3.2 Gen 1 Flash Drive with one of the USB-C 10Gbps ports. I ran Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and got a Read/Write speed of 105 Mb/s and 200 Mb/s respectively. Then I did a drag-and-drop test with a 1.44GB video file. It took 38 seconds to transfer the file, which equates to a transfer rate of approximately 30.72 MB/s.
I was impressed that Satechi included a braided USB-C extension cable, but am a little confused why there isn’t at least one USB-A port on the adapter. I think I would prefer the USB-C 5Gbps port be a USB-A port just for versatility. This adapter also feels a little heavier than some others I’ve used, but that isn’t a deterrent to me.
Conclusion
Satechi makes world-class products and while they feature premium prices, you do get what you pay for. The devices that Satechi makes are top-notch and provide a great user experience. This is a great adapter and a fantastic upgrade to the v2 option.
