Sabrent MINI 4-port Rotating USB Hub Review:
A unique, portable USB hub.
I’ve been using a new Sabrent MINI 4-port Rotating USB hub for the past week or so. This unit is designed to match the silver metallic styling of recent MacBooks, but I found it is at home on just about any Windows, Linux, or Mac machine.
It features a three position locking mechanism that allows the USB connector to be inserted into your computer either in a parallel or perpendicular fashion to the orientation of its USB ports. At first I thought I was going to be out of luck because my laptop’s headphone jack would have been blocked by the position of the USB port, and my HDMI ports blocks on the other side. Just a quick turn to the left and the USB connector was flipped so it fit perfectly on my laptop.
I tried the unit on my Windows 8.1 machine and my Ubuntu 15.04 machine. There were no drivers to install, and it worked flawlessly. I now use it full time on my laptop to make it simpler to undock and take it with me.
I would have liked the unit to have been USB 3.0, but it works at the full speed of my external optical drive, most of my thumb drives, and of course keyboard and mouse. I will say the locking action in the three positions feels a little flimsy,
but it has held up well so far. I only use it in the fully rotated position so no problem for me. I think if you were to use it in the parallel (up and down) position, it might give you a little trouble staying there.
The unique rotation, modern style, and small size, make this a nice companion in your laptop bag.
