Tonight while browsing the App Store, I stumbled upon Jimi Hendrix: The Complete Experience. Out of curiosity, I decided to take a look at it. What I discovered was a really well-designed, entertaining app.

I will admit that while I enjoy Jimi Hendrix’s music and appreciate his contribution to the music world, I am not really a Hendrix “fan”. My dad is the “real” Hendrix fan of our family. Because of my father’s interest in Hendrix, I decided to poke around and see what it was all about.

This app is not only a look at Hendrix’s music, but it is also a walk-through his life. There are five categories users can visit within the app: discography, filmography, venues, locations, social media integration and of course, multiple device connection. The most interesting function of this app is the use of geo fencing within the location category.

When a user opens the location category, they are greeted with the familiarity of a Google Map interface. A menu appears along the side and then markers appear on the map indicating areas of the country where there is a Jimi landmark. This is a pretty cool feature and I discovered that Jimi was a resident of Ft. Campbell, KY for a short time while with the 101st Airborne Support Group. The iPad’s location services requests to use your location so that it can notify you when you are close to a Jimi Landmark. I declined allowing the app to use location services, but I could see how this could be a very cool feature for those who are traveling the country with the specific purpose of visiting Jimi Landmarks.

The app does integrate with iTunes, of course, to allow users the ability to instantly purchase and download their favorite Jimi tunes. Despite the discography category offering this option, iTunes download is available throughout the app. In the upper right-hand corner of the app, a very small, subtle icon for download is present.

All in all, Jimi Hendrix: The Complete Experience is a smooth, clean app that presents the history of an artist in a unique way. Even if you are not a Hendrix “fan,” I would suggest you download this app and give it a try. It’s a great app to play around with. It is available on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. It was recently released on November 17 and is on version 1.0.
