In this issue of Recap in Tech News – Nest Protect Receives Software Update, Apple Ups iCloud Security, HP Announces New Chromebooks, Apple-based Payment Feature Expected at 9.9 Event, and Intel to Release Core M Processor.
Nest Protect Receives Software Update
Over the next few weeks, Nest Protect owners will begin receiving updates to bring the software up to version 2.0. This update includes some interesting features including a steam check, which allows the smoke detector to differentiate between smoke and steam – a feature that many smoke detectors do not have. The Nest app for iOS and Android will also get an update. Another feature for the Nest’s software update is the “What to Do” option. This will allow users to customize notifications depending on the emergency alarm that is triggered. Probably the most interesting addition to the Nest software will be the ability to use Nest products on a hidden WiFi network.
Apple Ups iCloud Security
Even though the recent security breach was the result of a password hack, Apple has put some additional security measures in place to help set iCloud users at ease. When someone attempts to change an account password, Apple will alert the user via email and push notifications. There will also be the option to restore iCloud data to a new device. Apple also has plans to implement a two-factor authentication.
HP Announces New Chromebooks
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced a new pair of Chromebooks to compete with Acer and Toshiba. The new Chromebooks come in two sizes – 11-inch and 14-inch. Some of the features include 4GB of RAM, a 1366 x 768 screen resolution, 16GB file storage with an additional 100GB of Google Drive space. The 11-inch model will be available starting October 5 for $279.99 (USD) and the 14-inch model will be available starting October 22 for $299.99 (USD).
Apple-based Payment Feature Expected at 9.9 Event
One of the many rumored features expected to be announced at Tuesday’s Apple event is a new Apple branded payment system. We previously reported that American Express has agreed to work with Apple and earlier this week, it was announced the Walgreens and CVS have reportedly ‘signed’ with the company as well. Many details are still under wraps, but it’s anticipated that the payment system will be NFC-based and will work in conjunction with the existing fingerprint technology.
Intel to Release Core M Processor
Intel has launched the Core M processor, the next generation for mobile segments. The Core M will focus on convertibles, ultra portables and tablets for the more energy efficient processor in the company’s history. The Core M offers 50% more CPU performance as well as 40% faster graphics performance compared to the Core i5-4302Y. Core M also offers significantly less power consumption. Core M will be available in three different SKUs at its launch.
