My game of choice for the past few years on PC has been the Finals and on mobile it’s been Call of Duty: Mobile. I have experimented with different setups to get the optimal gaming experience for that game. I started with my iPhone and touch controls, but quickly added a gamepad (Razer Kishi V1 for iPhone). After that, I migrated to my iPad and started using an Xbox controller. Then, I upgraded again to use an external monitor. The final setup I’ve come up with is powered by the REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet. That tablet gives me up to 144 fps in-game and is compatible with the other gear I want to use.

The one thing that has really been a stick in my side is a solid docking station to power and connect all the devices to each other. I’ve tried several different options, and they have always been a little too bulky for my taste. This is why the Razer Handheld Dock Chroma exists.

User Experience

One of the best things about the Razer Handheld Dock is how easy it is to get started. It comes with a pre-installed host cable that has a 90-degree USB-C connector, and the top lifts up to reveal the rest of the dock for your gaming handheld, tablet, or mobile phone. The lid is a little stiff, which keeps your device secure, and the ports on the back are very easy to access. Overall, the dock feels solid, with a premium build quality.

Power

One of the things I wanted to test thoroughly was the power delivery performance of the dock. The tech specs on razer.com list it as delivering up to 85W, while the product page claims up to 100W.

Although my gaming tablet doesn’t need that much power, I wanted to see the dock’s maximum capability. I connected an Apple 14-inch MacBook Pro (M4, 2024) to the dock. Since the dock doesn’t include its own power adapter, I used the Anker 737 charger and a 240W USB4 cable from StarTech.com to supply power to the dock and any connected accessories. With this setup, the dock appeared capable of delivering more than the 85W listed in the tech specs.

Once the MacBook Pro was connected, System Profile reported:

• Wattage: 90W
• Charging: Yes

The 90W value reflects the negotiated USB-C Power Delivery profile between the charger, dock, and MacBook Pro. USB-C PD works in standardized power steps such as 65W, 90W, or 100W, rather than strictly following advertised ratings.

Because the Anker 737 Charger can supply well over 90W, the dock can negotiate a 90W PD profile with the MacBook. This doesn’t mean the MacBook constantly draws 90W; it simply indicates the maximum available when needed.

Under heavier workloads, like video exports, gaming, high screen brightness, or multiple peripherals, the MacBook may approach the full negotiated wattage. Lighter use will result in lower power draw.

Overall, the test shows the Razer dock can provide near full-speed charging for the 14-inch MacBook Pro, very close to what Apple’s 96W power adapter delivers.

Display Compatibility

I have tried to play Call of Duty: Mobile on a gigantic 45-inch monitor. What I found is that the performance on a 27-inch 2K monitor is best suited for my setup. The 27-inch ASUS ROG Strix OLED (XG27ACDMS) monitor matches the REDMAGIC tablet’s native 2560 x 1440 output at 144Hz, which means I get a sharper image, smoother gameplay, and no scaling issues. On larger ultra wide displays, the tablet often falls back to 1080p, which makes the image look noticeably softer. The smaller 27-inch screen also keeps everything comfortably within view, making it easier to track enemies, monitor the HUD, and stay competitive during fast-paced matches.

The only video port on the Razer Handheld Dock is HDMI 2.0, which has a maximum refresh rate and resolution up to 4K/60Hz. Fortunately for me, that also means that at 2K (1440p), I can still achieve the 144Hz that is the maximum for Call of Duty: Mobile. Even though HDMI 2.0 has its limitations, it was likely chosen over HDMI 2.1 because it is more than sufficient for handheld gaming hardware’s current performance limits, while also keeping the dock more affordable.

That said, I was able to easily connect an HDMI cable and play comfortably at 2K/144Hz.

Peripheral Connection

Aside from the USB-C PD port and HDMI port, there are three USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports. With my REDMAGIC tablet, I usually connect a wireless keyboard, wired mouse, and wireless headphones. The headphones and keyboard use 2.4GHz wireless dongles, while the mouse uses an extra-long USB-A cable. Since USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 supports speeds up to 5Gbps, the dock easily handles all three devices at the same time. Using the USB ports this way gives me more of a desktop gaming experience. Alternatively, you could connect a controller to one of the ports, but I typically use Bluetooth instead.

Performance

While gaming, the connection remained very stable, performing just as well as other docks I’ve used. My previous dock was a Thunderbolt 5 model, which was extremely reliable but also quite large, whereas the Razer dock’s smaller footprint makes it much better suited for a mobile gaming setup. I didn’t experience any lag, disconnects, or display issues, and the dock handled multiple peripherals seamlessly, negotiating all connections without problem. Passthrough charging also kept up during demanding use, with the tablet being the only device that needed power.

The Razer dock’s size and foldable design make it very practical for both desk setups and travel. It fits perfectly with my minimal, portable setup, and when I want to take it on the go, it’s easy to fold up and pack into my gaming bag. I also really enjoy the RGB lighting. It adds a fun, colorful element to the setup that I personally love. While the port layout isn’t the most convenient for quick access, it works well for keeping the front of the desk clean and uncluttered.
