Years ago, some friends of mine got into a video game called Katamari Damacy. In this game, players control a tiny prince who rolls a ball around, collecting objects from the world around him. The main antagonist of the game is the King of All Cosmos. At the end of each level, he appears and transports the tiny prince to the next level via the Royal Rainbow. The reason I mention that is because the Royal Rainbow looks a lot like the Rainbow Weather main icon, and I think that might be what initially endeared me to the app.

The truth is that I am constantly looking for the best possible weather app. I live in the Midwest, and our weather is extremely volatile and can be very dangerous. Just this week, there were tornadoes and life-threatening flooding just three hours north of where I live. Because of this, I like to keep a close eye on what is going on weather-wise. I have one of our local news provider’s apps, but it is ad-laden and takes a long time to load. When you have dangerous weather bearing down on you, the last thing you want is to wait on an app to load.

That makes checking the weather feel much more straightforward, especially when I just want a quick answer about what is happening now and what I can expect over the next few hours.

The minute-by-minute precipitation forecasts have also proven particularly useful in everyday situations. During a recent stretch of rain and storms moving through the area, I noticed Rainbow Weather updating nearly immediately as conditions changed. Being able to see those changes happen so quickly made it much easier to understand what was coming and plan accordingly.

There are also plenty of settings to customize, including severe weather alerts. I particularly like that severe weather notifications can be selected by region, which could be especially useful for people who travel or regularly keep an eye on weather conditions in different areas.

The home-screen widgets aren’t particularly customizable, but they are still useful. They provide a quick look at the current weather without requiring me to open the app, which makes them valuable for those moments when I simply want to glance at the weather and move on.

Throughout my testing, Rainbow Weather has performed smoothly and consistently, and I haven’t encountered any frustrations or limitations that have detracted from the overall experience so far.

After using Rainbow Weather for a few weeks, I would choose it over my previous weather app. Two of my biggest frustrations with weather apps have always been not receiving notifications quickly enough and having to move between multiple tabs or menus to find the information I want.
