The Plugable TBT5-AI series features a modular Thunderbolt enclosure for developers and a plug-and-play Enterprise solution for secure, full-stack deployment.
Plugable today announced the launch of the TBT5-AI series, a new category of Thunderbolt-powered hardware purpose-built for local AI inference.
Leading the series is the Plugable TBT5-AI, a high-performance bare enclosure designed for the “Technical Builder”. This device serves as a “build-your-own” local AI solution, allowing developers to transform standard Thunderbolt Windows laptops into private AI powerhouses by adding their own GPU and software stack.
Where most AI is currently trapped in the cloud or throttled by weak mobile chips, the TBT5-AI enclosure lets users plug workstation-class power directly into their PC. By hosting a user-supplied GPU at the desk, the TBT5-AI enables the use of powerful open-source models and bypasses cloud subscription fees entirely.
Thunderbolt 5 Drives Breakthrough Performance
Utilizing Thunderbolt 5, the Plugable TBT5-AI delivers 80Gbps of bi-directional bandwidth. This massive throughput provides the direct PCIe access necessary for fast AI inference and complex data analysis, removing the performance caps that previously limited external GPU solutions. The TBT5-AI acts as a “blank slate” for the developer community, offering the modularity and raw technical potential needed to run local LLMs and tools that a laptop can’t handle on its own.
850W Power Supply Sustains High-Performance GPUs
Designed for a custom build experience, the TBT5-AI features a built-in 850W ATX 3.1(80+ Gold certified) power supply that was constructed with 100% Japanese capacitors to support the most demanding hardware. This provides a dedicated 600W of power to a user-supplied GPU connected to the internal PCIe x16 slot, which offers four lanes of PCIe 4.0 at up to 64Gbps PCIe bandwidth, twice what was available in previous Thunderbolt generations. With support for power-hungry cards like the NVIDIA RTX 4090 and 50-series, the TBT5-AI provides access to the installed GPU’s dedicated VRAM required for large-scale AI.
Flexible Local Model Stack for NVIDIA GPUs
With a user-supplied NVIDIA GPU, up to the NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition, the TBT5-AI supports both open source and commercial frameworks for running local AI models. Developers can deploy through NVIDIA NIM and the broader CUDA ecosystem, use lightweight runtimes such as llama.cpp, integrate Hugging Face tooling, or leverage enterprise platforms like Microsoft Foundry.
This flexibility enables teams to evaluate, prototype, and run RAG pipelines, SQL-aware analytics, and other AI workloads locally, with the freedom to choose the software stack that best fits their technical and production requirements.
Integrated Hub Expands Workstation Connectivity
While its primary job is GPU acceleration, the enclosure also offers features to enable workstation integration via a single cord. The TBT5-AI leverages Thunderbolt 5 to deliver 96W host charging to keep laptops powered, 2.5Gbps Ethernet for fast, wired networking, and 10Gbps USB-C and USB-A ports for high-speed peripherals.
Expanding the Ecosystem: The TBT5-AI Enterprise Series
For organizations planning broader, standardized deployments, Plugable is introducing the TBT5-AI Enterprise Series. This series is designed to solve the AI adoption deadlock by providing “Intelligence You Own”. By moving inference from the cloud to local, air-gapped hardware, the Enterprise Series allows organizations to bypass the security, privacy, and compliance risks that often stall AI initiatives. The Enterprise Series offers plug-and-play, full-stack local AI solutions through three specialized SKUs: the TBT5-AI16, the TBT5-AI32, and the TBT5-AI96. These units arrive bundled with professional GPU options that the end user installs and include Plugable Chat.
Plugable Chat is an innovative enabler for system integrators and enterprises to do AI knowledge retrieval. It can run local and air-gapped with no “phone home” behavior. Plugable Chat acts as an orchestration layer that makes local models dependable for real work. It progressively surfaces only the schemas, documents, and tools needed for each request, guiding reliable SQL, code, and document workflows to present transparent, auditable evidence for every output, from the exact executed query to the raw results. Users get a fast, private, and verifiable on-prem AI that meets enterprise requirements for security, compliance, and repeatable rollout, without cloud dependencies or per-token fees.
These TAA-compliant devices meet strict procurement standards for government, legal, and healthcare sectors, providing a fully transparent and auditable solution that ensures no “phone home” behavior or hidden data harvesting.
Availability
A limited release of the Plugable TBT5-AI enclosure will be available for $599.95 at Amazon and Plugable.com on March 10, 2026. For more information on the full series and to sign up for updates, visit https://plugable.com/ai.
