uniVERSE case system allows you to expand your phone’s features.

At first glance, the OtterBox uniVERSE is pretty standard: white/gray or black color options, slim design, and drop protection like you’d expect from any OtterBox case. What sets the uniVERSE apart from any other case, however, is its modular functionality when paired with collaborative accessories from companies like olloclip, Polar Pro, SanDisk, and Square.

OtterBox uniVERSE Case System REVIEW

I recently received a black uniVERSE case at ShowStoppers at CES, along with a Polar Pro Trippler Tripod to use in conjunction with it. The case, as I mentioned before, is pretty standard. It has a nice feel to it; the back part isn’t rubbery or particularly grippy, but the textured surface provides enough traction to prevent your phone slipping out of your hands. The front bit is more flexible to allow you to easily take the case on and off. The case allows full access to all ports, though it does make side button pressing more effortful than other cases I’ve had.

You can remove a small panel on the back of the case to replace it with one of the tripod attachments. This is also how many of the other modules attach to the uniVERSE case, like the Stash Wallet or iXpand Flash Drive. This attachment style allows much more access to your phone than the usual clamp, as you can easily slide the clip on and off your phone. The only problem this poses is if you have to mess with your phone positioning a lot, as I found that trying to set up different angles with the phone still attached to the tripod resulted in some phone falling. I also wonder if repeated switching of modules could wear out the interlocking pieces that hold the modules and case together. As for now, it works like a charm.

The tripod also has the usual cell phone clamp attachment and a GoPro mount, so it, like the uniVERSE case, is multifunctional. At its smallest, the Trippler is about nine inches long, and it can telescope out to be 29 inches fully extended. It extends and collapses easily by twisting the sections to lock and unlock them. The tripod legs magnet together to form a grip or handle. The aluminum ball mount head allows easy positioning at almost any angle.

OtterBox uniVERSE Case System REVIEW

The uniVERSE case and the Trippler Tripod work wonderfully together, and that gives me some high hopes for the other collaborations within this case system. I would definitely be the kind of person who would switch out modules often, depending on what I was doing, and I feel like that’s the kind of market OtterBox is looking for. The only downside for me is the overall look. It looks functional, which is not at all a bad thing, but it doesn’t quite look good. I think the usefulness outweighs my shallowness, but I suppose the point stands that if you’re looking for a fashion case, this isn’t your line. Most of the accessories are standard nondescript black and look similarly practical. But overall, I love this idea and can’t wait to try out more modules.
