OMGmoji has a fun concept but has poor execution.

I’ve never really been that big into emojis. I use the occasional smiley face to accentuate my messages to friends and family, but I don’t go crazy with a pictograph that someone has to decipher just to entertain someone. That said, I can see the appeal of making texts a bit more fun and friendly-looking since you can’t ‘hear’ a person’s tone through the printed screen. There are quite a few standard emojis that come pre-installed with iOS, but there are also quite a few apps out there that will add to your collection quite nicely. One such app is called OMGmoji.

OMGmoji is actually an add-on app that will only appear in your Messages app. There is no actual application to go into — it’s all controlled right through the Messages interface. I have to admit that I didn’t quite understand how to enable the add-on. So, seeing how some others might have this issue, I thought I would include the instructions.

  • First, download the app from the App Store. It will automatically install into your system.
  • Then, you will go to Messages and start a new text.
  • Next, to the messaging field, there should be three icons. The camera for inserting photos or video, the Touch icon, and then an App Store icon. Tap on the App Store icon. This will pull up options for finding images, video, and GIFs.
  • In the bottom left corner, there is an icon with four dots. When you tap on it, you will see a Manage option. Tap on that and then you will see options for add-ons for the Messaging app. This is where you can enable apps that have been installed like OMGmoji. And once the app is enabled, this is also where you will go to insert the emojis you want to use.

OMGmoji Is a collection of over 5,500 hand drawn Message stickers. You can stick the images directly on top of photos, message bubbles, and even other stickers. New stickers are added frequently and the app supports resizing and rotating the stickers, too. The collection has a wide variety of images to use for all occasions. I have been pretty impressed with their quality and quantity of the collection. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to use any of the stickers. And here is why.

OMGmoji Is free to download, but none of the stickers are unlocked. I looked through dozens of stickers and every single one came up with a ‘premium’ label. The app states that there are in-app purchases, but it’s really a subscription service. The information on the app reads — Current prices for the subscription are $1.99 USD/Month or $9.99 USD/Year and may vary from country to country. There is a free 7-day trial with Unlimited Full Access, but if you choose to sign-up for it, you will automatically be charged for the subscription 24 hours before the trial period ends. The charge will go to your iTunes account.

First of all, I don’t like subscription-based apps. Plus I don’t think an emoji app really warrants a subscription. It should be a one-time charge if they want to charge for it. Second, I don’t want to chance something automatically renewing on me. I just don’t like that method of charging for apps.

I like OMGmoji in the sense that the quality of the images is good and the organization of them makes sense. For example, if you tap on a sticker that says “Happy Birthday” it will bring up a whole bunch of stickers that relate to birthdays. I don’t like the pricing structure and I don’t like that the app is a ‘free’ download because I feel like it’s misleading. Could this be a fun app? Sure, but it’s just not for me.
