Ultra-rugged PowerPack with integrated Tile technology. Never lose your battery pack again.
As smartphones have become smarter, the power sources seem to have stagnated. Apple has tended to be very hush-hush with the battery size of its phones. A quick search of the internet suggests that the iPhone 7 has a 1960 mAh battery and the iPhone 7 Plus contains a 2900 mAh battery. This upgrade was only modest when you review the previous model iPhone 6s Plus had a 2750 mAh. The new A10 chipset is supposed to reduce energy use and improve efficiency. Many sources say that you should get a full day of use out of the phone with moderate activity. Personally, I am lucky to get to bed after about 18 hours of use (6 am-12am) with my phone greater than 12%. There are a lot of dead zones for WiFi and LTE in my area. This may contribute some to my battery woes. To be safe, I tend to use portable power packs. That is if I don’t misplace them.
While at CES 2017 in Las Vegas Nevada, I was struggling to keep my phone charged. Touring the floor, using quite a bit of camera/video, LTE data and communications, I was forced to constantly keep my phone plugged into a portable battery. Within the Sands Expo center of the Venetian, I ran into the team from Nomad and talked to them about their latest tech. I have been incredibly impressed with Nomad, with their cases and with their team. While there, I was introduced to the new Nomad PowerPack with Tile integration. The packaging is incredibly eye catching and demonstrates the product very well. The cover is a light black with an image of the rubberized battery. It further details the ultra rugged construction, 9000mAh battery, ability to charge the iPhone 7 3.5x, Mil Spec 1.5M drop tested and the ability to locate the battery with tile. I like the color scheme, specifically the use of the orange within the information labels. Turning the packaging over, the back provides additional information. In addition to repeating the information on the front, the rear face details the pass-through charging and fast charge output 5V 3.0A, 9V 2.0 A and 12V 2.0A.
The device is nestled in form fitted foam. Along the bottom is the battery and along the top is a charging cable in a plastic Ziplock style bag. The matte black, oval shaped rubberized battery is very visibly appealing. The top has a diamond-like texture, which is really neat. The grip helps to reduce the chances of dropping and the rubberized exterior is supposed to be 1.2M mil-spec tested. The NOMAD name is hidden in plain sight, recessed into the plastic. The back of the pack displays the FCC ID, and information about the pack: input 5V 3A input out 1 5V 3 am, 9V 2 A and 12V 2 A and output 2 is 5V 2.4A. The device weighs 8.7 ounces, and measures 4 3/8″ long by 3 1/8″ wide by 15/16″. One side of the oval cylinder is flat and the other has 3 ports. The ports from left to right are USB C input, USB C output, Power indicator button/LED, USB-A output, tile speaker, and tile activation button. There is no cover for these ports, which may lead to dust and water into the ports.
The device comes with a 39″ USB A to USB C charger. Unfortunately, USB A is limited to about 2.4A. Thus to get full quick charging speeds, you will need a USB C to USB C cable. Apple does sell a USB C to lightning cable, if interested. Out of the box, the battery indicator suggested 1 bar of power. I plugged this into a 12V 2.4A wall outlet and left it overnight (12 am to 6 am). The device had all 3 LED illuminated. As a bonus, I had my iPhone 7 Plus plugged into the USB-A output port and tested the passthrough charging. My phone was able to charge at roughly 1% per minute and was charged by morning. The iPhone 7 plus can typically charge in about 2.8 hours with the standard wall charger and about 2 hours if you use an iPad charger 12V/2.4A. The internal components of the iPhone prevent overcharging and the 2.4A output of the PowerPack provided to be more than sufficient to charge my phone. Perhaps when Apple releases the iPhone 8 they will allow faster charging. Alas, faster charging may mean faster battery degradation.
The battery alone is amazing in shape, form, coloration and capacity. If that was all it did, it would be worth having on hand for your charging needs. However, there is more that this device can do for you. At roughly $25 for a 1 pack and $70 for a 4 pack, Tile is one of my favorite trackers. However, I am not happy with the 1-year battery life and the need to return the device. This process is known as the ReTile and will cost you $12 per device to upgrade to the newest device. I am pleased that the tile features are embedded into the battery. To activate the tracking features, open the small white pamphlet entitled “Getting started with your Power pack locate with tile.” Open this up and you will see a QR code that will take you to tile.hellonomad.com. If you do not have the app on your phone, it will take you to the IOS or Google Play store (depending on your device).
Once installed, there are a few options to find your device. First, you can locate it with sound by ringing the PowerPack from the app. Second, you can use the app to see the last place seen and thirdly you can rely on Tile’s global network to update you on location. Essentially everyone using tile creates a grid-like network to locate your item. Once the app is downloaded, you will be taken to a “+” icon to add a tile. From here you can select original, slim, mate, other (Tile partner products). Select other and you will see Nomad Trackable PowerPack. Press the small button on the PowerPack “tile” and hear a nice jingle. Your phone will now activate the PowerPack. While in the app, select find and hear the Powerpack ring. You can share the tile with a family member or friend. You can also change the ringtone. I felt the Bionic Birdie was my favorite and left this alone. The volume is a little quiet, especially inside of a bag. However, the find last location option is really helpful.
If it was the goal of Nomad to create the most advanced portable battery, they have succeeded. The rubberized exterior is both appealing and protective. Combining the rugged exterior with Panasonic Li-Ion battery cells and integrating the latest USB C technology, allowed Nomad to create an incredibly fast charging battery capable of 3A input and output. To utilize the device to its fullest, you may need to buy additional cables. It was able to charge my iPhone 7 plus about 2.5 times. A rough estimate of the number of times a device will charge is to take the capacity and multiply it by 0.8 and then divide that number the mAh of the battery to be charged. In this case (9000mAh*.8)/2900mAh (iPhone 7 plus) will generate 2.48. For the iPhone 7 (1960mAh) it is 3.67.
To take this device one step further, they integrated tile into the circuitry, allowing you to find the device. Unlike the traditional tile device, the Nomad Powerpack is powered by the internal battery pack and does not need to be replaced after a year. With built-in speaker for the Tile, ambient light sensor to adjust LED at night and an amazing power to weight ratio the Nomad Powerpack is perfect for on the go activities. I wish that there was a rubberized cover option for the USB ports to enhance dust and water protection. However , his is simply a selfish request and not a negative of the device at all. I like that you can change the jingle of the tile. I also like that the tile uses the battery as a source for power and still has a small internal charge to maintain the tile. This will allow the integrated tile to have a life of longer than a year. I was able to get just about 3 charges on the iPhone 7 plus.
I would highly encourage you to visit nomad at hellonomad.com. You will have the options of searching through their new cables and to evaluate/purchase the PowerPack. Additionally, you will be given an option for 10% when you enter your email. This is a great company, with a great time and I am happy to report that this is a great product. I would rate the battery at 5/5 stars.
