Nielsen TOP TEN provides insight and trends for mobile users.


Nielsen Holdings N.V., a global information and measurement company, released a mobile app this month, Nielsen TOPTEN. The app shows what trends are occurring throughout global markets in varying categories like television, books and movies. Nielsen Holdings, N.V. was founded on the principle of selling engineering performance surveys.

Founded in 1923 as the AC Nielsen Company, it was the first company to offer market research. Today, Nielsen Holdings N.V. operates in over 100 countries, employs 35,000 people and produces $5.6 billion in revenue (2012). Most people recognize the name, ‘Nielsen,’ alongside TV ratings, but Nielsen Holdings N.V. does marketing research in all areas of consumer purchasing. Several years ago, I was asked to participate in a Nielsen survey about my TV viewing habits. I believe they were trying to ascertain whether or not I watched streaming video more than television broadcast shows. It was interesting to me that my habits might influence whether or not streaming video became more mainstream. It is after all, Nielsen’s data that measures how much Diet Coke is sold in stores.

On September 16, 2013, Nielsen released their first mobile app that includes the top ten products for each of the categories they do research for. The purpose is to provide insight into trends for users and consumers. Categories include:

  • TV Shows
  • Music
  • Movies
  • Websites
  • Books
  • Video Games
  • Mobile Apps
  • Consumer Products

Growing up with TV shows like Roseanne, where the family’s dream is to be a Nielsen Family, it’s exciting to me to have the research in the palm of my hand. My favorite feature of Nielsen TOPTEN is that you can favorite products and even if they fall off the top ten list one week, you can still find them in your favorites list within the app. I also like that the app is organic and constantly growing and changing. Because the data does change week-to-week, the app must change, too.

Nielsen TOPTEN is available for download in the App Store for free. There are no in app purchases. A user only has to sign-up for a free account.
