One of the better mail apps that I have tried, but quite costly.

As of May 2017, there are 2,200,000 apps on the iOS App Store, according to Lifewire.  With so many options, it becomes difficult to pick between the good and the mediocre.  Personally, I tend to be cheap and use more free than paid apps.  However, I have found that the adage “you get what you pay for” is often true.  I currently have 4 email accounts that I manage regularly. I, like many, have relied upon the native iOS Mail application, to sync mail between my MacBook Pro, iPhone 7 plus, and iPad Air 2.  If all you really want to do is to read/send and perhaps flag some emails, you probably do not require any additional bells/whistles or app support.  The benefit of so many apps is that you will often find multiple attempts at a similar idea.  Newton Mail, formerly CloudMagic, adds so many features to the standard mail application that I may have to rethink my cheap ways.

Newton mail options

Start with downloading the free 16.9 MB app trial from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.  Although I do not have an Android device, I like the idea of cross platform utility.  You will immediately notice that this is not a brand new app, as they are on version 9.8.8.  The reviews on the IOS app store both praise and condemn the product for the numerous updates.  The description of the app promises support for Gmail, Exchange, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, iCloud, Google Apps, Office 365 and all IMAP accounts.  Furthermore, the discussion promises read receipt, snooze, send later, undo send, sender profile, connected apps and you can trial the application for 14 days for free.  Unfortunately, you will lose automatic email update, all push notifications, and the above promised super features.  Essentially, once you get used to the app, and enjoy the features, you will continue to need to pay the annual fee.

Navigate to Launchpad and open the paper-airplane Newton app.  There are a series of 9 welcome screens, detailing the supercharged features of the app.  On the first screen, you are given options to log in or to start the free trial (no credit card required).  The app welcome screens really succeed at detailing the strengths of the application.  Enjoy push notifications on all of your devices, know when someone reads your emails, snooze allows you to put a hold on an email and allow it to be resent to you at a later time.  You can get details about the sender of the email, decide to send an email at a future date/time, and unsend an email for about 30 seconds. I was unable to find a way to recall an email after the little icon appeared at the bottom.  Essentially you get a quick undo, as each email is kept in a proxy server until it is sent.  Once sent, it is final and not able to be recalled.  Of the features, this was probably the most exciting feature of the mix. I know I have sent emails accidentally before complete.  The option to unsend, correct/finish and then resend works really well.  This does truly allow you to “Abort mission and relaunch.”  You can link email content to multiple productivity apps: “Todoist, Evernote, OneNote, Pocket, Trello, Wunderlist, Instapaper, Zendesk, Italian salesforce, and Asana.”  This list is really impressive and should help significantly with productivity.  The app also supports multiple languages: English, Dutch, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Greek, and Ukrainian.

After selecting “Start Free Trial,” you will be taken to an additional email page.  From this page, you can select the type of account you wish to add. I started by selecting Gmail.  When you select Gmail, it will open Safari and will launch “Sign In- Google Accounts.” Type your email, enter your password, and then 2-Step Verification (if setup with 2-Step Verification).  Setting up your first email was literally that simple.  You will get an authenticated page and then the app will ask you to set up Newton with a password.  I was initially afraid that I would not like the app email layout, as it was easy to get used to a single view.  The Newton Mail app layout is very intuitive and easy to understand.  Across the top, you have access to a very prominent search bar, you can filter starred and unread messages with a click, you can see the subscription timer reminder, options, compose an email and evaluate your account.  Just to the left of the search bar, you will see 4 staggered horizontal lines.  Select this and choose between the various boxes of google.  Hover over one of the messages and notice 6 small icons will appear.  From here you can delete emails, archive messages, move messages, snooze, mark as read, and you can star the message.  If you choose to snooze, you can choose to receive the message again Later (2 hours), Afternoon, Tomorrow, Day after, Saturday, Monday or pick a date.

Touch one of the emails and it will open it into its own page.  Across the top of the app, you will be able to trash the message, mark it as spam, move it, archive it, snooze it (you can change snooze settings) and mark as unread.  Navigate between messages using the left/right arrow.  Compose a message and access your profile.  Selecting compose will open a new window.  You can add a recipient to the “To” section, then type the message in the subject. If you want to add an attachment, you can select the paper clip across the top right or you can choose the clock and get a notice when your message is read and remind email if no reply is made.  After scouring the reviews on the IOS app store, I discovered that the limitations of the app start to become quite evident.  You can attach a total of 20MB per email with a max size of 10MB each.  Gmail will currently allow you to send files up to 25MB in size and you can receive file attachments as large as 50MB.  Larger files can be stored in the Google Drive and links are sent instead of the message.  This system is actually pretty convenient.   Other concerns include search lag/issues for emails over about a month old (I did experience this). There is currently no calendar support for IOS, but they are working on this feature).

Many of the advanced features will be found by selecting the profile icon and choosing settings. Adding additional email accounts is not as intuitive as the very first account.  To add email accounts, you will need to go into settings and click the little + icon along the bottom left.  This will bring back the original selection of mail sources. Once you find this section, adding emails becomes very easy again.  Additionally, if you wish to change/manage your signatures, adjust tools etc., you can access this through settings.  The application is really convenient and easy to use.  The mechanic is smooth, the appearance is very trendy and modern.  My overall concern about this app is the recurring $49.99 fee.  I do not know that the features, in their current state, are worth that price.  Again, I have become used to the IOS Mail app and really did not get as much excitement out of the unsend and read/unread, as I thought I would have.  I will continue to use this app for another week, but will likely return to my previous option.  If the app were mine to manage, I would create a base, a medium and a premium tier with email volume allowances, the size of attachment allowances or similar.  We really should be able to buy the product, and add enhancements.  I do not want yet another subscription. I would personally rate the app and experience 4/5 stars, it is just too costly for my preference.
