Nekteck Type-C PD Wall Adapater
- Built-in cable reinforced for durability
- Does not overheat
- Charges devices efficiently
A great alternative to standard chargers.
A couple of years ago, I found myself with a faulty power adapter for my 15-inch MacBook Pro. Because it was a manufacturer defect, Apple replaced it under warranty, but if they hadn’t, I would have had to spend $98 to replace the 87W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C cable just to get power to my computer. There are other options out there for charging Apple computers but I’m always a little bit leery about third-party manufacturers. That said, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try out the Type-C PD Wall Adapter from Nekteck as an alternative portable power source for my MacBook Pro.
The Type-C PD Wall Adapter is meant to be a replacement for Apple’s standard wall charger for laptops. This particular model provides up to 90W of power so it can charge the 15-inch MacBook Pro with no problems. In addition to working with Apple’s laptops, the charger is also compatible with the Google Pixel 3/2/XL, PixelBook, Galaxy S9/S9+/S8, Nintendo Switch, and other USB-C laptops. The power adapter has passed rigorous testing by USB compliance standards so that consumers don’t have to worry about damage to their devices. The built-in USB-C cable is 6-feet in length and features a next-generation Type-C connector that is fully reversible. The charger also features smart technology and intelligently identifies devices to automatically provide the fastest and most efficient output current (5V/3A, 9V/3A,15V/3A, 20V/4.5A).

The power adapter is packaged in a nicely branded box with the Nekteck logo and company name stamped on the front of the box. The back of the box shows several certification stamps and describes some of the features of the device. When you open the box, you will find a simple plastic container that holds the adapter in place inside the box. There is a warranty card included, but no user manual. I wasn’t surprised to find the absence of a manual because let’s face it, this really is a plug-n-play device.
The USB-C cable is attached permanently to the wall adapter. I rather like this option because it means that you will never have to search for a connector cable for the adapter. The end of the cable is reinforced where it attaches to the adapter. The prongs that plug into a wall outlet will fold up into the adapter for easy storage. As hearty as this adapter seems to be, it would have been nice if Nekteck had included a carrying pouch with it so that the cable wouldn’t have the chance to get tangled up with anything else.
My primary laptop is now a Late 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro. That machine requires 87W to charge its internal battery. I did an initial test to ensure that the adapter would, in fact, charge the 15-inch laptop and it was successful. I did a little more extensive testing with a 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro though because it only requires a 61W power adapter and I wanted to see how quickly the 90W adapter would charge it. When I started charging the laptop, it had 31% battery power. The computer calculated that it would take approximately 2 hours 4 minutes for the battery to reach 100%. After 50 minutes, the battery had gained 46% and the timer was stating it would take an additional 1 hour and 21 minutes to reach a full charge. As it turned out, 30 minutes was all it needed to reach 100% at that point. I unplugged the adapter when the computer was done charging and found that it did not retain any extra heat. This was surprising to me because even my Apple adapter warms up after an extended charging period.
The Nekteck Type-C PD Wall Adapter is a very budget-friendly alternative to the Apple power adapter for MacBook laptops. It’s a safe way to charge your laptop when you don’t have your standard power adapter. I had successful tests and think that aside from its size and weight, the Nekteck Type-C PD Wall Adapter is a really great addition to any Apple user’s technical kit.
