Necklace of Skulls gives you an interactive gamebook in the palm of your hand.
Many years ago, I remember watching a TV show on Saturday mornings called Name Your Own Adventure. On this show, kids would write in and hope that their adventure was chosen by the show’s producers and subsequently documented and shown on TV. While my adventure was never picked, I still loved the idea of choosing an adventure. Now, there are games that allow you to pick your destiny and your adventure. One such game is Necklace of Skulls.
Necklace of Skulls by Cubus Games is a game from the category ‘interactive fiction.’ It’s available for mobile devices operating on iOS or Android. So, what is interactive fiction? Basically, it gives you the option to ‘play’ moments within a written story. Written by Dave Morris, Necklace of Skulls is filled with angry gods, deadly traps and other ghostlike creatures throughout the Mayan civilization.
Necklace of Skulls is unlike any game I’ve ever played. I love the ‘name your adventure’ aspect, but I have to admit that the play is a bit slow. If you are the type of gamer that enjoys action and fast-paced, high-energy gameplay, Necklace of Skulls probably isn’t for you. If you enjoy reading and want to find yourself more immersed in your story, Necklace of Skulls is an awesome.
Necklace of Skulls is classified as a gamebook. To play, you simply read the story and then choose from a list of outcomes that takes the story in its direction.
“Gamebooks are awesome. I have fond memories of slugging through Choose Your Own Adventure-type books when I was a kid. I’m also a fan of Dave Morris’ work. An engaging gamebook requires a great writer—and we were fortunate to work with Dave on the gamebook version of his mesmerizing tale.” –Quim Garreta, co-founder of Cubus Games.
