A great navigation app for iOS.

My first GPS device was a Garmin and I’ve tried to stay loyal to that brand because I’ve been so happy with its performance. I’ve never been truly happy with the GPS provided on my phone and have always had a separate unit. That might change now that I’ve tried out NAVIGON from Garmin.

NAVIGON is a full-fledged navigation app. It does not require the user to have internet access in order to use the navigation feature. When you first start up the app, you select the areas that you want maps for so they are actually downloaded to your phone. This is great because you don’t have to worry about losing a signals and getting lost. The only downside is that the maps can take up a lot of space on your phone. I only have a 16GB iPhone 6 so space is a big issue for me. You can be conservative about the maps you save to your device, but it’s something to be cautious of.

NAVIGON has a very sophisticated search function that will map your destination. The search field is located at the top of the screen the entire time you are using the app and you can type in any search term to find its location. It’s very, very easy to use. I’ve only had the app for a couple of days, but have found it to be quite useful and I’m certain that the more I use it, the more features I will discover.

Some of the features of NAVIGON include:

  • Regular map updates
  • Intuitive address entry
  • Up-to-date information like traffic, speed camera alerts, and free parking spaces on the roadside

NAVIGON is an ‘international’ app and you have the option of including maps of Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand all in the same app. The app also uses employs a new usage concept. The other NAVIGON region-based apps available require an upfront cost for the app and then in-app purchases for other features like Traffic LIVE or Panoramic 3D View, which are included as part of the package with NAVIGON.

NAVIGON is free to download and gives users the option to select a one month, one year, or unlimited usage subscriptions. This gives you the flexibility to use it as needed. Take me for example, I don’t take a lot of road trips, but when I do, having NAVIGON working for me would be a great option. That would only require me to have a one-month subscription when I need it. You do get a 7 day trial of the full app when you download it.

In using the app, I’ve found a couple of features to be quite impressive. First, the app doesn’t have to ‘recalculate’ when you make a wrong turn. It just automatically updates your instructions. It was great to have that be a simultaneous update as I was driving. Another great feature of NAVIGON is the way it interacts with other apps on your phone. For example, I was listening to music through Pandora and had my phone connected to my car stereo through a Bluetooth receiver. When a turn would come up, the music volume would lower and the navigation direction would pipe through the speakers. The music would continue playing and would come up full again when the navigation was done. I thought this was a really nice touch.

NAVIGON is a really nice, stable app for navigation. It does not disappoint or lead you in the wrong direction. The app is now available for download in iTunes.
