Keep your stuff nearby with the MYNT Personal Tracker.
Sometimes you just forget your keys. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked out the door only to realize that I had to go back in to grab my car keys. It’s frustrating, but it happens to everyone. I think the worst part is not remembering where you left them. That’s why I’m glad that there has been an insurgence of Bluetooth trackers that you can easily attach to your keys so that you don’t lose them.
I admit that I’ve tried several different types, but today, I’m excited to review the MYNT Personal Tracker. It’s an advanced Bluetooth tracking device that can also act as a remote control, alarm, and presentation clicker. The device utilizes Bluetooth 4.0 (low energy) and works within a range of about 50 feet. The system works with both Android and iOS operating systems as well as Mac OS and Windows for the remote mode. MYNT uses a CR2020 coin battery and comes with one pre-installed. The device is waterproof (IP43) and can be attached to nearly any product.
The packaging is small. There is an outer cardboard sleeve that surrounds a hard plastic inner case. The tracker and its accessories are embedded inside. When you open the inner case, you will find the MYNT tracker device, an extra CR2020 battery, a key chain, two double sided stickers, and a quick start guide. As is the case with most tracking devices, the first step in the set-up process is to download the app. MYNT gives you a couple of options on how to do this. There is a QR Code on the back of the packaging sleeve along with the website address where you can download it. You can use either of those methods or visit the App Store (Android or iOS) like I did and search for “MYNT”.
Once you have the app downloaded, you follow the initial prompts about allowing permissions and then activate the battery inside the MYNT. There is a small slide lock on the side of the tracker that you have to slide in order to access the battery tray. The tray will actually come all the way out, but you can easily slide it back into place. The next step is to make sure that the MYNT’s battery is operational and that the MYNT is not locked to another device. The center bar on the top of the tracker is actually a button that you can press and then see the status by a LED light that is located beneath the button.
Now, you can follow the installation steps given by the app. You will be directed to register your product by creating a MYNT account. They only require an email, username, and password. You will then be asked to pair your MYNT to your phone. This process isn’t difficult but can take a few minutes. The phone should automatically detect the tracker once you press the button on the device. Once it does, you identify the tracker on your phone and it will connect via Bluetooth.
After it pairs with your phone, you will need to select a mode depending on how you plan on using the device. I chose ‘Keys’ since I plan on attaching it to my keys. The app will then check for firmware updates and recommend that you update the device in order for it to work properly. When I updated, it took a few minutes. You are given a progress bar on your app and directed to not navigate away from the app or close your phone while the update is in progress. Once it’s done, you are free to start using the MYNT tracker.
As I mentioned above, I am using my MYNT with one set of my keys. I have a set of office keys that are the way into my office. So I can’t lose them. The MYNT has already proven itself because whenever I get too far away from them, I get a notification that I left them somewhere. You have several options when you are setting up the MYNT for a specific device. The phone alarm can be set for 3, 6, or 30 second time intervals. This means that it will ring for that long. I have it set for 3 seconds and when I set it off, the 3-second alarm goes off continuously until I press the button on the MYNT signifying that I found it. The MYNT also has an alarm, but I have mine currently turned off. One setting I particularly like is the sensitivity. You can have it on Low, Middle, or High. I believe Middle is sufficient for most cases, but if you are trying to keep track of your child by tagging them with the MYNT tracker, it might be best to have it on High so that when they wander off, you will be notified immediately.
In addition to the alarm settings, there is also a map that shows the last known location of the MYNT. This is useful if you inadvertently leave your keys at home and are in a panic because you can’t find them at a friends house. You can simply pull up the app and it will show you where you last searched for them.
So far, I’ve been very impressed with the performance of the MYNT tracker. The tracking aspect of it works beautifully and the alert system, when there is separation, is spot-on. One of the tests I ran was in my office. I left my phone on my desk but took my keys with the MYNT tracker attached away from my office. I also had my Apple Watch on at the time. I left the corridor where my office was located and went to another location inside the building. There were a couple of walls and quite a bit of wiring and electronics between where I was and my phone, but I knew from previous experience that my watch would stay connected to the phone. I was hoping the same would be true for the MYNT and it was. As soon as the MYNT was out of range of the phone, I got a notification on my watch asking if I forgot my keys, which is a default warning when the MYNT is too far away from the phone. This was an impressive test, in my opinion, considering all the barriers in between my phone and the tracker.
One thing I would like to note is that you will receive an alarm from the MYNT tracker if you have it enabled when the signal between the phone/app and the device is disconnected. When I opened up my app this morning, I noticed that the connection between the two devices had been lost and because I had the alarm turned off, I didn’t notice it. The volume on the alarm is preset, which is a shame because some people with hearing loss won’t be able to hear it. I would love to have control over the volume for that population.
The MYNT is an advanced portable tracking system that works really well. It’s easy to set up and it looks really cool. I can recommend this for any type of user.
