Advanced portable power for advanced smartphones.

As smartphones evolve, so too must the batteries that power them. I have been an advocate for portable power for many years now and feel that everyone who has a smartphone and/or tablet should have a portable charging solution to go along with it. Unfortunately, many people now have smartphones that use USB-C as its main method of charging and there aren’t many truly portable batteries out there that will satisfy their power needs. Fortunately, Moshi has provided some rather unique solutions to this problem and one of them is the IonSlim 5K Ultra-thin Portable Battery.

Moshi IonSlim 5K Ultra-thin Portable Battery REVIEW

The IonSlim is a part of the IonBank family of portable batteries that Moshi has in its product lineup. While all the IonBanks are exceptionally portable, the IonSlim is only 8.5mm thick. Therefore, it can quite easily slip into a pocket or bag without you noticing. The case is built out of anodized aluminum and it weighs around 143 grams.  The battery is a lithium-polymer cell with 5,150 mAh capacity. It will output 15W (3A/5V) and it supports fast charging. The IonSlim 5K features a dual-role USB-C port. While it can be used to charge devices it is also an input port to recharge the battery pack itself. Moshi includes a reversible USB-A to USB-C charging cable with the battery.

The IonSlim 5K comes in standard Moshi packaging. You can see the battery from the clear plastic portion of the box and read about the device’s features on the outside of the package. On the inside of the box, you will find a quick start guide and warranty card along with the battery and the aforementioned USB cable. The QSG is multilingual and quickly outlines the best ways to use the battery. The USB cable that is included is only 6 inches in length, which in my opinion is ideal for this type of use.

Moshi IonSlim 5K Ultra-thin Portable Battery REVIEW

The battery has probably one of the sleekest designs I’ve seen from a portable battery. I’ve had my hands on many different types of power banks, but this one is so incredibly small and easy to handle that it takes the top of the charts for me. Not only is it super slim, but it actually mimics the design of many modern smartphones in the market today. The IonSlim 5K is available in one color currently — Titanium Gray — and that color matches the Space Gray of Apple’s product line. The battery comes pre-charged with 50% power so that you can use it straight out of the box. This is somewhat rare with power banks and I’m glad that it’s something that Moshi thought of when packaging the IonSlim.

To test out the IonSlim, I pulled out my Google Pixel, which charges exclusively via USB-C. Using the Moshi cable that came with the IonBank, I started charging the Pixel. Because it’s not my primary phone, the battery on the Pixel was actually down to 0% and the phone was completely dead. As soon as I plugged it into the IonSlim, life was breathed back into the phone. Within just a couple of seconds, the phone showed it’s drained battery icon and started charging. I left the pair plugged into each other and within about 20 minutes, the Pixel had gained a little more than 30% battery power. I thought this was a wonderful test of the IonSlim’s performance capabilities.

Moshi IonSlim 5K Ultra-thin Portable Battery REVIEW

I think that the IonSlim 5K is a really nice option for portable battery. It charges very quickly, looks great, and is very easy to transport. One thing to note is that I found the battery was a bit warm after charging the Google Pixel for those 20 minutes. It wasn’t hot, but there was definitely a heat exchange happening while the battery was outputting power to the phone. I would recommend this power bank to anyone who has a USB-C device.
