A step in the right direction, but would love to see even more features developed.

Not too long ago, I started using a monitor stand to help resolve some neck and should pain caused by using a monitor that was not at a proper eye-level for me. Since I sit at a computer for 8+ hours a day, making sure that I have something that is ergonomically correct for me, is of vital importance. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of trying out the ProBASE HD Monitor and Laptop stand from MonitorMate. I found it to be a capable stand/dock but something that could use some improvements. Today, I’m happy to release my review of the ProBASE X by MonitorMate, which has a lot of the professional features I was looking for with a fresh new look.

DETAILS

The ProBASE X is a dual-purpose monitor/laptop stand just like its predecessor. This model, however, includes some upgraded features like a Gigabit Ethernet port and an SDMicro SD Card Reader. The ProBASE X is available with a sleek black matte colored finish that provides a simple look of elegance for the stand. In addition to including a dock for your computer, the ProBASE X also has a storage drawer, which is the perfect size for flash drives, cables, and even slim external hard drives. The stand also includes a dock for connectivity. You can connect your laptop (or monitor) using USB 3.0. There is an 18W QC/PD Fast Charge port available along with the aforementioned Ethernet port and card readers.

MONITORMATE ProBASE X Aluminum Monitor Stand REVIEW

USER EXPERIENCE

To say I was curious about the ProBASE X is an understatement. I really liked the other version of the monitor stand but saw some room for improvement. Out of the box, I started seeing a lot of these changes with the ProBASE X. The first difference I was happy to see was the fact that a power adapter was included with the stand. I feel like if a stand is going to provide power delivery, then it should come equipped with an AC adapter.  So I’m very glad that MonitorMate included that with this version of the stand.

Second, I really love the sleek, black finish of this monitor stand. We happen to have a 34-inch ultra-wide monitor that has a black stand. So, we were very happy to be using this gorgeous black stand as a riser for that particular monitor. It blends in very well and adds a wonderful sense of elegance to the entire set-up. The stand of the monitor does stick out just a bit from the ProBASE X, but the monitor is well-balanced overall.

I appreciated that both SD/Micro SD card readers were included as well as the Ethernet port. I think that these are great additions to the ProBASE stand but as it turns out, it still isn’t quite enough to make this stand a ‘real’ hub for me. For one thing, there is no connection for a monitor. I would love to see that added in. To me, a hub means there is one connection going to the computer to connect it to all the devices connected to the hub. Right now, I feel like the ProBASE X is more like a professional-grade charging station. It’s a bit of a weird hybrid between stand and hub. There is still no option for cable management on the stand, which I really feel like should be added in no matter what other options are added in the future.

CONCLUSION

The ProBASE X monitor stand is definitely a step in the right direction for me. It’s an evolution from the previous version and some of the issues I had with the ProBASE HD have been solved with this updated device. I really like that it includes professional level input options like the SD/Micro SD Card readers and the Ethernet port and that with this version of MonitorMate’s stand, a power adapter is included. I do still feel that there is room for improvement though.
