Miffy Night Lamp: Move over Hello Kitty, Move over Pete The Cat, make room for Miffy. Having 3 children, 7 year old Daniel, 4 year old Samuel and 1 year old Olivia, we have our fair share of scary nights, nightmares and fears of the dark. Luckily Miffy the Lamp is there to push fear to the side, allowing for a restful night sleep.
Who is Miffy?
Miffy, (konijntje “little rabbit) a small female rabbit, is the lead in a series of picture books from the Dutch author/artist Dick Bruna. The character originated in 1955, with her first book, and has starred in 30 other books. Miffy is an icon in the Netherlands, rather than just a fad. According to the Miffy Wikipedia site, there have been 85 million copies of the books sold and Miffy has starred in 2 TV series (“Miffy and Friends,” “Miffy’s Adventures Big and Small”), a motion picture movie ( Miffy the Movie 1/30/13), has apps in the IOS App Store and has a clothing and toy line. As stated above, she is a well known icon that is trying to expand her reach.
Impression of the Miffy Night Lamp:
The Miffy Night Lamp arrived in very eye catching, (child eye catching specifically) packaging. The packaging was colorful blue depicting a starry sky in the background and a field of yellow/orange and blue flowers along the bottom. There is a large picture of the white Miffy Rabbit with orange shirt. The side of the packaging provides some of the tech specifications for the LED light. The lamp is a 3.5 W 60 Lumen system, providing warm white light and is listed as lasting 30,000 hours. There are a few things to mention about these numbers. First, wattage does not refer to brightness of the bulb, but relates to the amount of energy the bulb uses. LED use much less energy than their incandescent older siblings (markedly so in some cases0. The indicator of brightness with the LED bulbs is the Lumen scale. In case it is not known, warm lighting or soft white provide a yelowish hue similar to incandescent bulbs. If you are looking for brighter, you should use a bright white or daylight bulb system.
Opening the top of the box, you see the ears of the lamp and and the attached power plug inside of a small cardboard box. Removing this, the upper cardboard with circular cut out, you can then remove the lamp. The lamp is quite cute and my children love her. It has replaced their nightlight in the corner. The lamp stands at about 12.5 inches tall, 6 inches wide, 5 inches deep and weighs about 10.3 ounces. The usage is rather straightforward. Simply plug the electrical adaptor (wall socket plug) into the outlet. To power on the lamp, slide the toggle on the switch to on. To turn off the lamp, slide this to off. The switch is located about 2 feet from the rabbit lamp. There is a total of 5 feet of cord included with the lamp, which is pretty standard.
I was impressed with the lamp. Although straightforward in regards to review material, the lamp has more of a bright white color than a warm white coloration. I like the orang shirt of the rabbit, I love that the light is LED, but I do not like that it appears it is not replaceable. Although the LED claims to have a 30,000 hour life, I have had LED bulbs blow out or stop functioning due to surge or just due to luck. I wish the light was able to be dimmed, but this is not an issue with a smart outlet such as the Lamp Module from Vivint. I do not have any tough love for this lamp. It has been tested and does exactly what it reports it will do. The output is great, the cord length is good and overall the product is well packaged and feels well made. My children love it, it is a very unique and child friendly lamp. It does not get hot, thanks to the LED technology, has felt pads along the bottom to resist scuffing and produces good light. This can act as a nightlight (like for my children), you can read from this as well. I rate it at 5/5 stars.
