I am a big fan of mechanical keyboards. There is something about the feel of mechanical switches that makes typing more enjoyable, especially when I spend so much of my day writing, answering emails, and editing articles. Unfortunately, my biggest frustration has always been finding one that works as seamlessly with a Mac as Apple’s own keyboards do.

Over the years, I have tried several mechanical keyboards, and while many offered an excellent typing experience, they often fell short in one way or another. Sometimes the dedicated Mac function keys don’t behave correctly, the microphone key wouldn’t activate Siri or Dictation, or I found myself keeping Apple’s Magic Keyboard on my desk simply because I needed Touch ID for logging in, approving purchases, or unlocking password-protected settings.

Thankfully, I recently solved the Touch ID problem with a clever 3D-printed accessory that incorporates a genuine Apple Touch ID sensor. That finally allowed me to retire the Magic Keyboard from my desk and focus on finding a mechanical keyboard that not only feels great to type on but also offers the functionality I expect when using macOS.

MelGeek sent me the O2 to review, and with the Touch ID hurdle finally behind me, I was able to evaluate it as my primary keyboard. After spending time with it, I can confidently say it delivers an excellent typing experience while working remarkably well with my Mac.

User Experience

After spending time with the MelGeek O2, I found that the overall experience comes down to how well it balances the things I enjoy about mechanical keyboards with the features I need from a Mac-focused keyboard. A great typing feel is important, but for my workflow, a keyboard also needs to integrate properly with macOS, provide reliable wireless performance, and make it easy to move between the different devices I use throughout the day.

During testing, I focused on the areas that matter most in everyday use, including typing comfort, macOS functionality, multi-device switching, wireless reliability, customization options, and the overall convenience of using the O2 as my primary keyboard. While there are some areas where the experience could be improved, the MelGeek O2 delivers a strong combination of mechanical keyboard performance and Mac compatibility.

Typing Experience

As someone who spends a significant amount of time typing every day, the overall typing experience is one of the most important aspects of any keyboard I test. The MelGeek O2 immediately stood out because of how smooth and effortless the keys feel. The low-profile switches provide a linear typing experience, with a consistent motion from the moment the key is pressed until it reaches the bottom. There is no noticeable tactile bump, creating a smooth and uninterrupted feel while moving across the keyboard.

The switches also do not require much force to register a keypress. While the light actuation makes typing feel quick and effortless, I found that I was slightly more accurate when applying a little more pressure than I typically use with a laptop keyboard. This does not mean pressing the keys aggressively, but rather using a more deliberate typing style that helped me maintain accuracy.

To put the keyboard through a real-world typing test, I used MonkeyType and achieved a speed of 87 words per minute with 97% accuracy. While these results are very close to what I normally achieve, I did notice that the more compact layout required some adjustment. Since the spacing between keys is slightly different from a full-size keyboard, my muscle memory was not immediately as reliable, especially when reaching for certain keys. After spending more time with the O2, the transition became easier, but users moving from a traditional full-size keyboard may need a short adjustment period.

One of the biggest surprises with the MelGeek O2 is how quiet it is. Mechanical keyboards are often associated with louder typing sounds, but the O2 produces a much more refined and subdued sound profile. This makes it a great option for shared workspaces or anyone who enjoys the feel of a mechanical keyboard without the louder noise that often comes with them.

Compared to Apple’s Magic Keyboard, the O2 offers a more mechanical typing experience while still maintaining a relatively low-profile design. It does sit slightly higher than Apple’s keyboard, which provides additional key travel but also changes the wrist angle slightly. The keyboard includes adjustable feet, but I would have preferred a little more flexibility in the available angles to improve wrist comfort during longer typing sessions.

Overall, the MelGeek O2 provides an enjoyable typing experience that combines the speed and smoothness of a mechanical keyboard with the convenience and compatibility Mac users expect.

macOS Compatibility

One of my biggest complaints with mechanical keyboards has always been that they often do not fully integrate with macOS. Features that work perfectly on Apple’s keyboards, such as the microphone shortcut, can sometimes be inconsistent or unavailable on third-party keyboards. The MelGeek O2 addresses that concern surprisingly well.

During testing, every major macOS function key shortcut worked as expected. The microphone/dictation key was especially important because it has been one of my biggest frustrations with other mechanical keyboards. Not only is it located on the F5 key like Apple’s keyboard, but it also worked reliably every time.

Multi-device Switching

One of the benefits of a wireless keyboard is the ability to use it with multiple devices without needing to disconnect and reconnect each time. The MelGeek O2 supports up to eight connected devices through its built-in wireless profiles, making it easy to switch between different computers, tablets, or mobile devices.

For testing, I connected the O2 to both my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. Pairing each device was straightforward. By pressing FN + 1-8, the keyboard enters pairing mode, allowing a new device to be connected. Once the devices were paired, switching between them only required a short press of the corresponding FN + 1-8 key combination.

In everyday use, switching between devices worked without incident. Moving from my MacBook Pro to my iPad Pro and back again was quick and reliable, with the connection swap completing within a second or two. This makes the O2 a great option for users who regularly move between multiple devices, especially those who use a Mac alongside an iPad as part of their workflow.

Wireless Performance

Beyond switching between devices, I also tested the overall reliability of the O2’s wireless connections. Regardless of which connection method I used, I did not experience any noticeable lag, missed keystrokes, or connection drops. The keyboard maintained a solid and reliable connection whether I was using Bluetooth or the included wireless connection.

I also tested how the keyboard handled everyday interactions with macOS. The O2 woke my Mac instantly, reconnected without issue after rebooting, and automatically reconnected after the computer returned from sleep. The Caps Lock key registered immediately as well, which is something that can occasionally be inconsistent with wireless keyboards. Additionally, the keyboard remembered my RGB settings after disconnecting and reconnecting.

RGB Lighting

The RGB lighting on the MelGeek O2 works as expected, but this is one area where I think there is room for improvement. The controls for changing lighting effects are easy to understand and use, but the overall brightness could be higher. In a darker environment, the lighting is noticeable, but in a well-lit workspace, the effects are more subtle than I would prefer.

Software

The software experience with the MelGeek O2 was the one area where I ran into some limitations. The software itself appeared to install and launch properly, but I was unable to get it to fully communicate with the keyboard in order to access the available configuration options.

I first attempted to use the web-based version through both Safari and Chrome. While the keyboard connected and was recognized, I was not able to access any customization settings or make changes to the keyboard. I also downloaded the macOS application, which was able to detect the keyboard, but it still did not provide access to options for remapping keys, adjusting settings, or customizing the O2’s features.

Since the MelGeek O2 is designed with Mac users in mind, having full software support on macOS would make the experience much better. The keyboard itself performed well without any customization, but users who want to take advantage of the programmable features may run into limitations until the software experience is improved.

Since I was able to use all of the keyboard’s core functions without software customization, this did not impact my day-to-day use, but it did limit the ability to personalize the keyboard.

Hot-swappable Switches

The MelGeek O2 features hot-swappable switches, allowing users to replace switches without soldering. During testing, I used the included keycap puller to remove several keycaps. The process was simple, and the keycaps came off easily without requiring much effort. Reinstalling them was just as straightforward.

I was able to remove the switch even though a switch puller wasn’t included. It popped out of the keyboard easily and was easy to put back in, too. If you plan on replacing switches with this keyboard, I would recommend investing in a decent switch puller.

Conclusion

Finding a mechanical keyboard that works well with a Mac has always involved some level of compromise. Many keyboards offer an excellent typing experience but fall short when it comes to macOS integration, while Apple’s keyboards provide a seamless experience but lack the feel and customization options many mechanical keyboard users enjoy. The MelGeek O2 does an excellent job of bridging that gap.

For Mac users who want the feel and performance of a mechanical keyboard without giving up the convenience of macOS features, the MelGeek O2 is an excellent option. It may not completely replace every feature of Apple’s keyboards, especially Touch ID, but it comes closer than many mechanical keyboards I have tested.
