Master Lock Bluetooth Smart Padlock Review

Master Lock Bluetooth Smart Padlock is the perfect connected device to keep your belongings secure.

Once upon a time, I found myself between classes in high school, unable to unlock my locker and get my books out. With only 5-7 minutes between classes, trips to the locker to swap out class books, fighting hallway traffic, and trips to the restroom, the last thing I needed was a bump lock on my locker. Unfortunately, this was almost an everyday occurrence. I have more than my fair share of close calls with the tardy bell. Fast forward to now and there are smart locks available that make it much easier to get in and out of lockers (or any other secured location) that you desire. Master Lock, the most well-known name in padlocks, has a Bluetooth Smart Padlock that is access remastered.

Master Lock’s Bluetooth Smart Padlock takes away the key and the combination lock and provides you with a simple easy-to-use app that replaces both of those archaic locking/unlocking methods. The app gives you the option to unlock your lock, share access with guests, and monitor the lock’s activity. It’s really quite remarkable. It’s very easy to use and Master Lock provides you with adequate information to get started. In fact, the most difficult thing about dealing with the Bluetooth Smart Padlock  is getting it out of its packaging.

Getting set-up is very easy. After you get the lock and instructions out of its package, you then download the apps and follow its step-by-step onscreen instructions to get the lock added and functioning with your phone. You are required to set-up a Master Lock account, but it’s free and only takes a minute or two. Once your account is set-up you add a lock by entering its activation code, which is located on the instructions. After you have your lock connected to your phone you are ready to go.

Operation of the lock is pretty straightforward. As long as your phone is in close proximity to the lock and the app is open, you can press the button on the lock and it will unlock. It uses a series of colored LED lights to show you a status. Green means it’s ready to unlock. One thing I noticed pretty quickly was that when the lock lights up as Green, you still have to manually pull the lock open. There is even a Locker Mode you can turn on so that your lock will remain locked even when you are in close proximity of it.

Now, even though your phone does most of the heavy lifting as far as unlocking goes, you still have the option to unlock the Bluetooth Smart Padlock manually. There is a D-pad of sorts on the face of the lock. This allows you to put in a Up-Down-Left-Right code that is reminiscent of old video game cheat codes. I was surprised at how well this system actually worked. It also gave me the piece of mind that if I left my phone somewhere or maybe my phone died, I would still be able to open the lock. This is also what you end up sharing as a temporary code with family and friends. When you share a temporary code, the app gives you the option to send it a number of ways (I chose to text it) and there is an automatic expiration date/time (approximately 4 hours from when it was generated) for that code. This is great if you need to let your sibling get into your locker or a landscaper to get into your yard barn. The best part is that the person you share the lock code with doesn’t even need the app to connect with the lock.

The Master Lock Bluetooth Smart Padlock operates off of one replaceable CR2450 battery. It measures 2” wide x 1.1” deep. There are two versions of the Bluetooth Smart Padlock – one that is indoor and one that is outdoor. I was able to test out the indoor version and it worked flawlessly.

This wonderfully efficient smart lock makes it possible to get into your secured belongings quickly and effortlessly every single time you open it. Connected devices are awesome. I get the biggest kick out of playing with new devices and finding new and amazing gadgets that make your life easier. The Master Lock Bluetooth Smart Padlock is one of these devices and I’m was very excited to test it out.
