Dynamic sound comes from premium earphones.

If there is one thing I like, it’s a powerful set of earphones. I sometimes have a hard time enjoying ‘earbud’ style headphones as they don’t always fit my ears correctly. That said, I really enjoyed the MH40 Over-Ear Headphones from Master & Dynamic so I thought that maybe the ME05 Earphones from M&D might be worth my time. I’m happy to say they didn’t disappoint.

Master & Dynamic designers have a passion for building beautifully designed, technically sophisticated sound tools for creative minds. The ME05 earphones are designed with this purpose in mind. They are compact but deliver the signature M&D sound quality. These earphones are built from solid brass and utilize heavy-duty cables. The earpieces are shaped to be ergonomic and allow for a comfortable fit in the ear. M&D uses 8mm titanium coated drivers and oxygen-free copper cables to deliver a rich, dynamic sound.

When you first open the box, you will see the ME05s carefully placed in a luxury leather storage case. The ME05s are wired and this storage case is a wonderful way to keep them from becoming unwieldy. Master & Dynamic also includes a polishing cloth, cable clip, and a canvas earphone case. Since the earphones are shipped pre-wrapped into their leather case, you have to sort of pry them out of the case. Below the main earphone holder, you will find a second storage compartment that holds the extra ear gels and a replacement acoustic filter. Master & Dynamic continues to impress me with their detailed instruction booklet that includes multiple languages as well as a full description of the product. This is actually something you don’t see very often.

The first thing I noticed when I put the ME05s in my ears is that they are heavier than many styles of earbuds. You have to remember that they are made out of brass so, this wasn’t completely unexpected. The nice thing is that even with a twist of my head, they didn’t move out of my ears. The inline controls are very tactile in that you can feel pretty easily which control is which without looking. The only thing I want to point out is that the volume up/down isn’t quite as ‘touchy’ as the multi-purpose button. You have to press them in a bit harder than the two volume buttons.

Because the ME05 Earphones connect with a standard headphone jack, I decided to test them out first with my MacBook Pro. The first noise I heard was a text notification. It was bright and clear. I quickly moved over to my iTunes library and pulled up some of my favorite music. Overall, I was impressed with first, how well the earphones actually fit my ears and second, on the quality of the sound. The different layers of sound that I was hearing from the ME05s was pretty complete. I find sometimes with earbud-style headphones that I lose some highs or lows, but the only thing I really felt like I was missing with this sound experience was a really feel of the bass line. I could hear it just fine, but there was no rumble like you sometimes get with over-ear headphones.

One other feature I was really impressed with was the sound isolation that the ME05s provide. Usually, with earbud-style headphones, I can hear a lot of ambient noise, but even with a medium volume level, I found that probably 90% of the ambient noise was filtered out. For example, I work in an office area where there are two people that discuss their work frequently. It’s not really bothersome to me, but their voices do carry. With the ME05s in place, I can only hear a slight murmur coming from their general direction. With other styles of in-ear headphones, I can hear bits of their conversation as if they were standing next to me.

My second test with the ME05s was with my iPhone 7. On my iPhone, listening experiences can be quite a bit different because 99% of the time, I am using music streaming services and not listening to music that is stored on the device itself. Also, because the iPhone 7 does not have a headphone jack, I have to connect the Lightning adapter so that I can use the ME05 earphones with the phone. As far as sound quality goes, I found that I had nearly the same quality level that I did on my MacBook Pro.
