MacBook Pro and Mac Candle are a perfect pair.
While the wait for the new 2016 MacBook Pro has been long for some, for me, it’s been nearly unbearable. Until this newest release, I was rocking a 2013 version of the flagship notebook from Apple and earlier this year, I actually moved back to my even older 17-inch MBP when I sold the newer one in anticipation of the laptop release this fall. So, the wait has been a long time for me. When I ordered the computer, I decided to spec is out and so my wait was extended even longer while the customized machine was created. I ordered the laptop the day pre-orders were allowed. My shipment was delayed until the week of November 28 — approximately 6 weeks from when the order was placed.
While I waited, I received a wonderful gift from Twelve South – the New Mac Candle. This 100% Soy Wax, hand poured candle was painstakingly made to smell like a new Mac computer. Those of you who love technology as much as me, know what that smell is. Twelve South decided to package it as a candle so that you can always have that ‘new computer smell’ in your home without having to shell out the funds for it every time. The scent of the candle includes Mint, Peach, Basil, Lavender, Mandarin, and Sage. The jar is pretty plain — a smoky gray glass with a silver aluminum top. It’s a pretty standard look for a candle of this size. There is, of course, a very smart-looking Twelve South label on the front that says “New Mac” across it.
When you first open the candle and smell it unlit, you really only smell a very nice, clean scent. It isn’t recognizable as a Mac smell. The trick is to light the candle and let it burn for a bit. You will start to notice that you feel nostalgic for a new machine to play with. The candle is 9 ounces and will last for 45-55 hours. The candle has been a best seller for Twelve South and it makes a great gift for any Mac lover.
Because the candle was said to smell like a new Mac and I just happened to have a new Mac being built for me, I decided to hold off on testing the candle out until I was able to unbox the MacBook Pro late in November. When I did, I did a side by side sniff test and found that yes, the candle really does smell like a new Mac.
Unboxing the MacBook Pro was a real treat for me. While it has the standard packaging from Apple (I do have a small collection of Apple boxes) and regular accessories that typically ship with a laptop, I was ecstatic to pull the plastic off the computer and lift the lid. One big thing I noticed was that the act of lifting the lid started up the computer. You will also note that there is no classic Apple startup sound. While I do miss that notable chime, I do really love the upgrades made to the new MBP model. The Touch Bar is a great addition to the laptop and I love how customizable it is. The integration of Touch ID for unlocking the computer is wonderful and I even love the keyboard. I did test out the first generation butterfly switch keys on a MacBook and wasn’t a fan, but I love the updated version on the MBP. They are fluid and just feel great when you type.
Both the 2016 MacBook Pro and the Twelve South New Mac Candle are wonderful products. Check out the unboxing and first look video below and if you have either of these items, we’d love to hear what you think!
