LifeProof FRE Case provides functional protection for the iPhone 7

I’m a fan of using a case on my phone. That said, I typically got for cases that are minimal in shape and size as I don’t like to impede the natural design and function of my iPhone. For these reasons, I typically stay away from ‘total defense’ cases like LifeProof or OtterBox. I do see the value in these cases especially for younger people (like teenagers) who are less careful about how they use their phones. I’ve had the opportunity to test out the LifeProof FRE Case for iPhone 7 and I have not been disappointed with it.

The FRE case was designed to be ready for any environment. It’s WaterProof, DirtProof, SnowProof and DropProof. The case features a built-in screen protector that is virtually invisible to the eye. You do have full access to the buttons and ports and when it’s sealed from water and snow, the FRE case meets or exceeds IP-68 ingress protection ratings. This case is also shockproof and meets military drop standards (MIL-STD 810F-516).

This case protects the iPhone very well. It’s lightweight and slim fitting but still, provides the same superior protection that LifeProof cases do. One thing I like about this case is that it assembles in two parts — a top and bottom. The two sides snap together and then there is a cover for the Lighting port. The touchscreen seems to remain responsive, but the covering over the TouchID button is a little odd feeling (it’s essentially plastic wrap). The buttons for the power and volume up/down are a little hard to depress. And at first, I couldn’t flip the mute switch.

Other than those small annoyances, I think the case is very functional and helps to protect the phone very well. I also like that LifeProof includes a small plastic tool to help you remove the case from your phone when you want.

The FRE case is available for both iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. There are many color choices to pick – I just had the plain black option. The case is a little pricey at $89, but is priced in line with many other defender series cases.
