Laptop roller provides flexibility for short trips.
I’ve taken a lot of short trips in my life. Sometimes they are for work and sometimes they are for personal reasons, but no matter the reason for the trip on constant remains — I never seem to have adequate baggage. I end up with a bag for my clothes and one for my laptop and its accessories. While there are some occasions where multiple bags make sense — like checking a bag and taking a carry-on onto a flight — sometimes I just want one bag for all items. I’ve been searching for a rolling carry-on suitcase that doubles as a laptop bag for a really love time. I finally found a really nice candidate for the bag with the Kensington Contour Overnight Laptop Roller.
The Kensington Contour Overnight Laptop Roller is designed to be flexible. In fact, one of the compartments has a file manager that can expand into the larger interior compartment. The bag is made out of 1680 Denier Ballistic nylon that protects against abrasions, punctures, and tears. It has two large compartments and then three smaller ones. Kensington makes it easy to organize your belongings and keep items such as pens and business cards separated with an easy-access pocket on the front of the bag. There is a smaller interior pocket inside the clothing compartment that is intended for toiletries. It’s water resistant and is big enough for a few small travel items.
The laptop compartment actually has a removable sleeve for the laptop. The sleeve is padded and zips securely into place when you need to remove it, you simply unzip the pouch and pull it out. One thing to note, I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. It’s a smaller form laptop and I didn’t have any issues with it fitting in the sleeve. This compartment will accommodate up to a 15.6″ laptop, but I don’t really see the pocket having a whole lot of room for much else. The interior of the laptop pocket is about the size of a 15-inch laptop messenger bag. Honestly, I would love to see this compartment be a bit deeper so that you can fit more laptop accessories in with it.
The front pocket that has the file sorter can be used for one of two things — either important files and paperwork or a tablet. Because this pocket expands into the clothing pocket, if you try to fit both or have an excessive amount of files, you will sacrifice some of the space you have for clothing.
One area that is sort of a surprise is the compartment where the telescoping handle resides. Normally, this area is just wasted space beneath the clothing. Kensington actually added a few organizational pockets for shoes or other accessories. I thought this was rather ingenious because you can use it for a wide variety of uses. I ended using it for a small tripod at one point. This would be a great place to stow some of the accessories you might need for your laptop or other tech devices.
While I haven’t had any overnight trips to fully test this laptop roller out with I did recently attend a technology conference and this ended up being my main production bag. That day I loaded the suitcase down with various production gear like a tripod, laptop, power banks, cables, and various accessories. The suitcase was pretty full at the beginning of the day and it gained, even more, girth as the day progressed because we kept getting handouts, business cards and products. The nice thing about this suitcase is that no matter how much I loaded it down, it still rolled around very easily. One thing to note about the wheels is that they don’t spin 360º — they only roll backward and forward. After this conference, I did notice that the kick pad started peeling off the back on the suitcase. This was really the only issue I had with the rolling bag. It didn’t prevent me from using it, but since it does provide a bit of protection for the bottom of the bag, I’m a little disappointed that it started peeling back.
One thing I would like to note is that according to the measurements of the suitcase, it’s a little larger than the FAA. According to most major airlines, the maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm), including handles and wheels. The size of the Kensington bag is 14.5 x 9.5 x 19.5 inches (WxDxH). With such minor differences, I don’t think you will run into many issues when trying to check into a flight, but it’s something I wanted to mention. It’s also important to note that the weight of the bag is around 7.5 pounds — empty. Some of the major airlines have a weight limit of 22 pounds for carry-ons. Again, it’s just something to mindful of when you pack.
Overall, I’m very happy with the Kensington Contour Overnight Laptop Roller. I feel as though it will do exactly as promised — provide a quality small form suitcase for the business overnight. You will easily be able to fit overnight toiletries, a change of clothes, and business equipment with no problems.
