Nice option for portable power, but not for every device.

I love my MacBook Pro. It’s makes working remotely a breeze. Even though the battery life is pretty great, it’s not never-ending. And, when you are working remotely, you have to have options for portable power. That said, you can’t always find a battery pack that will charge a laptop. My fiance actually has a lot of problems finding portable power solutions because he has the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. That machine requires 87W of power output to charge. It’s a very hard find, but I thought having a 13-inch MBP would make it easier, but as it turns out, it’s a lot like looking for a needle in the haystack. Fortunately, Kanex, a company that I’ve recently found to have superb accessories, has a portable battery specially designed for larger items like my MacBook Pro.

Kanex GoPower USB-C Portable Battery REVIEW

The Kanex GoPower USB-C Portable Battery is a 15,000 mAh power bank that can be used to charge most USB-C compatible devices. It has two output ports for charging devices — USB-C and USB-A — and it also charges by USB-C itself. It will charge two devices simultaneously and provide enough power to charge your mobile phone several times or your laptop computer twice (based off of 2015 MacBook standards). The GoPower has a built-in circuit protection board with priority charging detection technology. This allows for pass-through charging when the battery is plugged in for charging itself. If your device supports it, the Kanex GoPower USB-C allows for fast charging of devices, too.

The battery comes in a white and yellow branded box with a variety of details listed on the box itself. Kanex does a good job of including several languages on the packaging, but honestly, it ends up making the box a bit cluttered and I’d rather see the highlights of the product and then have all the languages included in the manual. As it is right now, it’s a little hard to find the information you are looking for. For example, when I pulled the battery out to see if it would work with my 2016 MacBook Pro, I was looking for a specific feature that stated how much wattage it would support. I was unable to find it on the box even though it calls out a list of compatible devices and describes the battery capacity in detail. The package contains the battery, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and the user manual. This was a little odd to me as well because there was no power adapter included for charging the battery from a wall outlet.

Kanex GoPower USB-C Portable Battery REVIEW

The GoPower battery has a really nice, sleek design to it. It’s Space Gray in color, which matches my laptop really well. It’s a slim battery, but it’s about the size of an iPad Mini. I love it’s slim profile because it’s easy to slide into a laptop bag. The only downside to the battery’s size is that you have to have it sitting on a desktop somewhere in order to use it easily. It’s not really designed for charging incognito. I do like that the battery has all of its ports on one side and that there is a 4-LED power indicator that shows how much charge is available on the battery.

As far as testing goes, I was able to charge my 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar from it. I thought the charging process was a little slow though since it took approximately 15 minutes to gain 1% battery power. I will say this though, I was actively using the laptop and the GoPower made sure that I didn’t lose any more power. My iPhone 7 charged quite nicely, too, but I did see the battery power drain a lot quicker once I plugged it in.

Kanex GoPower USB-C Portable Battery REVIEW

I think the Kanex GoPower USB-C Portable Battery is a nice option for mobile workstations. I would probably only use it for emergencies though since I found a few limitations of it. I like that it has a high capacity, but wish there were more details concerning the wattage it will accept since there are so many different power options available in today’s market.
