Would it be a mistake to state that our culture tends to live on-the-go? From the time we awake in the morning, to the time we lay our heads down, we are technologically connected. I know that I cannot be alone in the problem that the day seems longer than the battery capacity of my phone. There are many days that I squeak by, with just over 10% battery remaining. There are other days that I charge my phone using a portable battery. With my wife’s Samsung Galaxy S5 and my iPhone 7 plus, we need to carry multiple charging cables to power our devices. The Kanex GoPower Plus Battery provides a convenient way to keep nearly all small/portable devices charged.
The Kanex Premium Portable Power Battery for iPhone and Android comes packaged in a glossy white box with a picture of the battery on the front cover. If you look closely along the bottom left of the package, you will notice the MFi certification (Made For iPod, iPhone). Turning the product over, the packaging notes a built-in Micro USB cable plus an MFI certified Micro to Lightning adaptor. The battery has two outputs, a USB-A and Micro-USB capable of 5V/2 A total output. The battery will intake 5V/2A via micro-USB.
The packaging promises an 8000 mAh battery capacity and states this should charge the iPhone 7 twice. The iPhone 7 has a battery capacity of 1960 mAh and the iPhone 7 Plus has a 2900 mAh battery. You will commonly find that portable batteries will only provide about 75-80% of their listed power. Thus, you will not get a full charge for an iPhone 7 plus from a 3000 mAh battery. Assuming 80% efficiency, you have 6000mAh of usable power. This should theoretically charge the iPhone 7 three times, the iPhone 7 plus twice or an iPad air 2 about 3/4 charge.
Once you remove the battery from the packaging, you will immediately notice the sleek edges and the hefty weight to the battery. Along the front bottom of the battery is the Kanex logo, which is a dark gray on a gunmetalesque metal background. A simple tap to the front top of the case will illuminate all the remaining power LED’s (4). Within the packaging, you will also find a 20 1/2″ USB micro to USB A charging cable, a 3 1/2″ by 6 3/8″ inch black felt drawstring carry pouch and a nine-language instruction manual.
The device weighs 6.8 ounces and measures 5 1/8″ tall by 2 5/8″ wide by 3/8″ thick. Along the top of the battery is a black rubberized strip that is a 2 3/8″ micro-USB cable. This cable ingeniously slides into the top of the battery for storage. After going through the supplies, I immediately noticed that there was no USB micro to lightning adaptor. I read through the four panels of the instruction manual and saw that the adaptor was mentioned. After looking more closely at the battery, the adapter is hidden inside the battery. When you lift the USB-Micro cable away from the battery, you will notice a USB micro port. Plug the cable into the port and you can pull the lightning adaptor out of the battery. When finished charging, you can slide the adaptor back into the battery. I really appreciate this feature, as it ensures that the adaptor is with you at all times. It frustrates me to have an adaptor with no way of attaching it to the device. Truthfully, you never have the adaptors when you need them. Kudos to Kanex for including this adaptor and having built it into the case.
It is also convenient to have the USB-A output port to charge a second device if desired. The battery has 4 LED lights to indicate the remaining power 0-25, 25-50, 50-75 and 75-100. I plugged a Drok USB multimeter into the USB A port and charged my iPhone 7 plus. Remember that current is on-demand and will be called by the device. My iPhone 7 pulled anywhere from 1 to 1.3A from the USBA port. Interestingly, the battery did not charge until I tapped the LED light area and illuminated them. This generated about 1% power per minute of charge. A similar rate of charge was noted from the lightning adaptor as well. I was able to charge from 65% to full in about 1 hour and this used about 1/4 of the charge. I wish that there was a numeric indicator, to alert you to the remaining battery. Alas, there is not and you must use the 4 circles.
The battery really provides a convenient method to charge your Android and IOS devices. My only complaint is I wish that this was a 10,000 mAh battery at least. I still feel it is an adequate charging battery, the adaptor makes the battery more universal. I would rate the battery at 4/5 stars.
