Incipio Performance Series for iPhone provide many levels of protection.

When I got my first iPhone, I dropped it. It was an exquisite gift to myself and one night while I was in our local shopping mall, it slipped from my hands and was broken on the hard tile floor below. This was the original iPhone and while I believe the newer models have much better impact protection in general, they are still quite vulnerable. That’s why when I keep my iPhone in a case. Usually that case offers some sort of impact protection, but I’ve not really made my case decisions based solely on that feature. Even though I find value in keeping a case on my phone, I don’t really want the added bulk that most impact protective cases offer. That’s why I was so glad to hear about the Performance series cases from Incipio.

Incipio Performance Series iPhone Cases Review

Incipio strives to provide superior products to customers. I’ve had the pleasure of testing out their phone cases before and have been exceedingly happy with the quality of the product and its function. This new line of cases promises an advanced level of impact/drop protection for the iPhone. The great thing about it is that Incipio recognized that not all users are the same and may not require the same level of protection. With the Performance series, you have five different levels of case that you can choose from – 1 being minimal protection and 5 being a defender-series case. I had the opportunity to test out all the levels of the Performance cases and found them to be a wonderful option for any type of user.

Level 1 – Lightweight Defense
This case provides minimal protection against drops and falls. It is a ‘shell’ style case that wraps solidly around your phone and it’s made out of a polymer material. It’s great protection against the elements and scratches. It does have a shock-absorbing impact ridge that most cases of a similar style do not have. This is a very nice option for the casual, everyday mobile phone user. The case slipped on the phone easily enough and it was easy to slip the phone in and out of my pocket. This case was one that I really enjoyed using during my regular daily activities.

Level 2 – Dual Layer Security
Level 2 introduces an additional amount of protection and the rigid outer shell. This case is still a shell style case, but it has a co-molded hard shell. It’s made from scratch resistant polycarbonate and is still surprisingly easy to install. The buttons were very easy to use with this level of case. And, as I tested them each out I found that wasn’t the case with each style.

Level 3 – Superior Drop Protection
On the surface, Level 2 and 3 seem to be very close to the same style. When you look at them side-by-side, the biggest difference is that Level 3 is a bit thicker. You start seeing some of that protective ‘bulk’ being introduced with this level. Installation is very easy – the phone snaps easily into place. Level 3 has what is referred to as a tri-molded design. There are three levels of inner protection – dual infused polycarbonate shell, polymer inner lining, and the impact ridge bumper. With this level I started noticing a bit of a weight difference and really started feeling the protection out of the case.

Level 4 – Absolute Protection
The Level 4 case introduces the holster clip into the design. I did actually test out the Level 3 case with the holster and it was too loose of a fit. This level also integrates a multiple layer designed case. There is an inner bumper case with a hard outer shell. Installation includes one more step, but is still very easy. There are four layers that provide military grade protection. Even the inner lining is a honeycomb design that helps with shock absorption. Sliding the case in and out of the holster is a bit of tight squeeze, but do you really want it to be loose and chance the phone sliding out of it? Not really. In terms of ‘defender’ style cases, this would probably be my main choice because at this level you still have a slim style, but the superior protection that a defender class case would provide.

Level 5 – Ultimate Defense
This is the bulkiest of the cases, but it still has a slim profile. This level also comes with a holster and I noticed that the holster between level 4 and 5 are different sizes to accommodate the difference in the cases. I’ve never really used a defender style case for a long length of time, but if I did, I would want something like this. It’s not waterproof/lifeproof like some defender cases claim to be, but it does offer that military grade drop/shock protection. The added layer on this case is the screen protector. It lays on top of your screen and then slides into the inner bumper case. I have to say that it was a little tricky getting the screen protector to lock into place correctly and I had to try a couple of different times. I also have to say that I found that the responsiveness of my iPhone’s touchscreen decreased. This could be because I currently have a glass screen protector on my screen. You could decide to not use the screen protector, but then you would essentially have the Level 4 case. One other big difference between Level 5 and 4 is that the Level 5 case is completely closed offering 360 degrees of protection. The buttons are a little hard to depress with this case.

Incipio Performance Series iPhone Cases Review

Overall, the Performance series cases from Incipio are a phenomenal option for protecting your most-used mobile device. The design is such that the cases all have a slim profile no matter what the level of protection is and installation was incredibly easy with each style. With typical daily use I found the cases to hold up very well. I did not put these cases through rigorous stress or drop testing, but felt that my phone was well-protected. I would love to see Incipio design a charging dock that would accommodate these cases. I have a standard charging dock for my phone that only works with open-ended cases and it becomes a hassle taking the phone in and out of the case in order to charge it. That’s really the only improvement I would make on these.

Incipio really designed these cases with the iPhone’s form and function in mind. They are a wonderful compliment to the phone and add not only protection, but also style. They don’t appear clunky or bulky at any level.
