My main computer is a laptop. I’ve worked off of a portable computing device since college and have just found it to be the best working option for me. With that portability though comes some drawbacks — such as digital workspace when it comes to photo editing or digital art creation. Working in marketing, I end up having a lot of layout work to do and having that extra digital real estate is important. User Experience
The display comes in a high-quality retail box. There is an image of the product on the front, but since the box is black it is a little hard to see the details of it. When you open the box, you’ll find the display laying on top. On the inside of the box top there is a protective section of thin foam to provide some safety to the screen, but I was expecting a bit more considering the premium nature of this product.
Below the display you’ll find the stand, the cables, pen and its stand, cleaning cloth, protective glove, and user guide. The user guide is actually not exceptionally helpful. There were a few times during set up that I tried to refer to it and found that I had to look up information online. There are several cables included and I was impressed with the labeling provided. The cables that are intended for power delivery are red and have a large label attached to them to indicate that they are only to be used for that purpose. I also really like that the larger cable bundle has a dual USB-C connector that attaches to the tablet. This makes for an easier time hiding cables after the installation is complete.
My primary computer is a 2020 M1 MacBook Air. I do a lot of product photo editing on a daily basis using Lightroom and I thought this would be a great test for the Kamvas. I downloaded the driver/software from huion.com and installed it. I didn’t have any issues with that process. I did, however, end up with some problems when it came to getting the display to receive a signal from my laptop. In the end, it was user error, but I want to document it here in case someone else runs into this issue.
First of all, the 2020 M1 MacBook Air does support external displays from its USB-C/Thunderbolt ports. You just have to make sure you are using the correct type of USB-C cable. If you use the one included with the Kamvas, you shouldn’t have any issues. I was able to connect the display to my laptop with the included USB-C cable and it worked fine. I tried to connect using one of my other USB-C cables and I was only able to use the controls – the video signal did not connect to the Kamvas.
Second, it’s important to understand the limitations of your host device. The Apple computers with M1 processors can only support one external display at a time and the system recognizes the Kamvas as an external display. So, if you are like me and use your MacBook Air with a larger external display, you will need to disconnect from it before the video signal will appear on the Kamvas. This was the problem I had. The controls were working on the display and I was able to use the pen normally, but the video wasn’t appearing on the display until I disconnected from my other monitor. After that, everything worked perfectly.
Finally, if needed, make sure you are using the correct type of power adapter. Huion does not supply a power adapter, but you can easily use one that provides at least 12W of power. I plugged mine into an Anker GaN Prime 65W power adapter and it worked famously.
In general, I was very impressed with the Kamvas’s performance. While the setup process can be a little daunting — especially when there are so many variables to consider system-to-system — regular operation of the tablet is 100% worth it. I realized after editing some photos that I could just use this as an external display. That makes it even better in my opinion because you get multiple devices in one package. You’re not just hauling a pen tablet around for editing, you can use it for watching videos or as a second screen for your laptop like I did. The Kamvas was even working with my laptop in closed clamshell mode, which was pretty impressive. My wireless keyboard an mouse signal weren’t interrupted at all and I was using the Kamvas as an external display.
I admit that my eyes had to adjust to the difference between the monitor I am used to working from (ViewSonic VP3481) and the Kamvas. It’s just the difference between the screen types and resolutions. Once I made sure the color profiles matched, it wasn’t difficult to go back and forth between them anymore. I did end up shifting the screen resolution when I was working in Lightroom because it was very hard to select some of the controls when they were so small on the screen.
I would say that the only complaint I have about this display is that the user guide wasn’t very helpful. There is a lot of information available through Huion.com but hunting for it can be a chore. It would be great if a more comprehensive manual was provided with the product or made more concise on Huion’s website.
