Unboxing & Assembly

I usually refrain from making direct product comparisons between competitors, but in this case, I feel it’s fair to include details (especially about the ordering process) for informational purposes. As I mentioned above, I have used many different ergonomic chairs in the past 10 years or so. Each time I find qualities I like, but for the most part, the chairs have failed to either live up to my expectation or they are just not a good fit for me. What I have learned is that every person/body type is a little different and may require different features for the user to be comfortable.

Just before using the Hinomi X1, I was bouncing between the Herman Miller Aeron and Embody Gaming chairs. Both of these premium-level chairs have a lot going for them and there are things I like about each one. The Embody provides a nice wide seat while the Aeron has fantastic back support. Neither of these chairs, however, could bring me 100% satisfaction. With the Embody I found myself having lower back pain after lengthy gaming sessions and the Aeron would cause leg pain based on where the seat’s frame rests on the back of my legs. Both of these are pretty specific issues for my particular body type and medical needs, but it’s something to be aware of.

Both Herman Miller chairs are considered industry standards and top-of-the-line when it comes to office/gaming chairs. They have a premium price tag and a fairly complicated ordering process. The chair comes completely assembled, but neither has its own headrest (I had to use a third-party vendor for that add-on) or a built-in leg rest. This is the first place the Hinomi X1 stands out for me. The ordering process is simple. Select your color choice, and height, and add it to the cart. That’s it.

With the Herman Miller chairs, I had to contact customer service to have certain features explained to make sure I was ordering the correct specifications for my body type. I waffled over decisions for hours and just couldn’t decide which version and specs would be right for me. With the Hinomi chair, I simply had to decide if I wanted the standard or extra-high version. I am right at that 5’9” cut off so I ended up going with the extra-high version. The order was complete within a matter of minutes.

As I mentioned the Herman Miller chairs do arrive fully assembled. While it’s really nice to be able to roll a fully assembled chair out of a box, the building process of the X1 is very easy and Hinomi even includes a quick assembly guide that is fully illustrated. One of my biggest frustrations when it comes to chair assembly (I’ve done it many times before) is having to flip through a book that has lengthy explanations of each step. Hinomi’s instructions are easy to follow and even though some parts of the chair are quite heavy, the process was direct and I had it put together in about 30 minutes. I was also very happy to discover that a hex wrench with handle was included instead of the cheaper L-shaped hex wrenches that are usually the standard tool. It’s much, much easier to use the handle version.

User Experience

Once it was all assembled, I sat down in it. I can’t tell you how good it felt to relax for the first time in years while sitting at my desk. I had immediate relief from my various maladies and I hadn’t even made adjustments yet! Since assembling the chair, I have spent at least 8-10 hours per day sitting in it — many days it’s more than that. It is supportive where I need support and I’ve not had any discomfort after long gaming sessions.

The leg rest is a godsend. This is the first office chair I’ve used with a built-in leg rest and I can tell you it makes a world of difference. If you are anything like me and you need to have your legs elevated, built-in is the way to go. I have tried detached stools, ottomans, and even leg hammocks under my desk. Each one of those options has failed in some way. The ottoman was not the right height for my chair, the detached foot stools were not supportive enough, and the hammocks would always get twisted or lose their firmness.

I hate having to make constant adjustments to something like that so the hammocks became more of a frustration than a help to me. The built-in leg rest slides out from under the seat of the X1 and then the leg support flips around and locks into place until you slide it all back under the chair. I really wasn’t sure what to expect from it, but the leg rest is balanced well with the chair’s body and it seems very sturdy.

Another unique feature of the X1 is its armrests. The arm rest does slide out, but the arm support is stationary and secured to the seat. I have had some office chairs that where the arm support slides out from the seat to provide a little extra seat width. It’s a really nice option for some extra comfort. While the X1’s arms do not provide this extra benefit, I think it’s really cool that they twist so that your arm is in a better position for reading from a phone or tablet. It’s a 30º angle, which I thought was odd at first, but I end up using it a lot when I’m gaming.

Back support is really unfathomable. I’ve not had a lot of back issues in my life, but over the past year or so, I’ve found myself waking up with a really stiff lower back. I think I’ve determined that it’s because of the way I was sitting while gaming. The other chairs caused me to shift my weight in such a way that I was compensating for my leg pain and therefore, my back would get twinged up. In the days since I’ve started using this chair, I’ve noticed that I don’t wake up with that same back pain.

The only real issue I had with the X1 was that the backrest would slide up/down when I would move the chair or adjust the headrest. This was a little bit of an inconvenience because it meant I had to re-adjust the back frequently. I did, however, receive feedback from support that a user may twist the headrest knobs counter-clockwise with both hands to decrease tension, which helps to ensure a stable backrest position. While this could be a bit more clear in the user guide, I was grateful to get the resolution from Hinomi.
