Halo Collar 5 REVIEW Is This Smart GPS Dog Collar Worth the Investment?

We tested the Halo Collar 5 with an energetic rescue pitbull to see how its GPS tracking, virtual fencing, and training features perform in a real-world environment where reliable boundaries matter.

Living with a dog changes how you think about how pets and new tech should mesh. I’ve got a male pitbull, he’s stubborn, strong, smart enough to get himself into trouble, and loyal enough that he thinks he’s one of the kids. Add in the fact that we live in a trailer park where space is tight, neighbors are close, and cars are even closer, you start to realize pretty quickly that his safety is something that requires constant attention. Unlike someone who has ten acres of open land, I don’t have much room for mistakes. If Bane decides a squirrel is worth chasing or wants to introduce himself to another dog walking by, it only takes a few seconds before he’s in a neighbor’s yard or getting a little too close to the road. That’s the reality of where we live, and it’s exactly why having reliable boundaries is so important to me. 

I needed something that didn’t just contain him, but actually gave me peace of mind without turning my yard into a full construction project, and that’s what led me to the Halo Collar 5.

First Impressions

Right out of the box, the Halo Collar 5 feels like one of those products that’s trying to blur the line between pet tech and modern wearable tech. It doesn’t look like the old-school shock collars people picture when they hear “training collar.” It looks closer to a rugged smart device you’d expect from a fitness tracker company. Really looks like a name brand GPS collar you’ll find on hunting dogs.

The collar itself is solid without being overly bulky. Bane is a thick-necked, muscular dog, so a lot of collars either look tiny on him or end up feeling uncomfortable. This one actually sits well on him without sliding around or looking like I didn’t get him the right collar.

Design.

I didn’t really know what I was to be expecting when I opened the box. I knew I had to choose the color and what I went with was midnight, a dark blue. They had a fair amount of colors to pick from, you could get Sunburst(yellow), Orchid(pink), or Graphite(black). They also have a trail series and those colors are Blaze( hunter orange), Realtree(camo), and they have a  new Ranger(dark green).

The Collar Strap is made of a Reinforced TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), and the reason that was a good choice is because its water proof, flexible, easy to clean, and doesn’t absorb water like a nylon strap, also meaning it doesn’t harbor bacteria like one either. 

Inside of the Main Electronics Housing is a High-impact polycarbonate/ABS plastic with the sole purpose to Protect the Dual Frequency GPS, LTE antenna, battery, and electronics, a super smart choice as it is very lightweight but durable enough to handle even the most active dogs.

The Contact Points come in two sizes, small and large, and are a high quality stainless steel to prevent rust and skin irritation.

My Experience.

I am going to be referring to my dog by his name alot haha, and his name is Bane, my wife is a big Batman fan and we thought Bane was the perfect name for him. So if you are reading, and you see the name Bane I am talking about my rescued pit, who is the most loveable family dog but is still very cautious of the world around him. He’s the best dog I could ask for, so if there’s a tool that can help keep him safe while giving him a little more freedom, it’s absolutely something I wanted to try. At the end of the day, his safety is worth far more to me than the cost of a collar.  

After spending some time learning how everything worked, I realized this isn’t just another tracking device or your run-of-the-mill training collar. It’s really a combination of GPS tracking, virtual fencing, and training tools all packed into something your dog can comfortably wear every day. 

Bane doesn’t just walk outside. He patrols, he checks corners, watches movement, and absolutely believes he is responsible for the entire perimeter of our yard. The amount of unwanted critters that didn’t make it back out is evidence of that! He has great recall and listens to us very well, it’s for those times when we aren’t there that the peace of mind is worth every penny. For instance if one of the kids leaves the gate open, there have been times that in the past where gate has been left open, (it used to hang a little low so it was a little hard for the kids) and he never leaves the yard but there has also been a time or two where if he finds himself on the hunt for a squirrel or other woodland creature he is going to forget about his boundaries and go on the hunt. Well that’s just animal instinct and I think it’s safe to say most of our dogs do that, and that’s completely normal behavior. Where it becomes scary is when you live in a more populated area, now if I’m outside and I see he starts to get that look in his eyes like dad let me go get it, I can easily tell him to stay or no and he listens very well, that’s not the problem. The problem is when I’m busy working on the car, or whatever it is, it becomes easy to assume he’s going to be right there in the yard. But all it takes is one time, one time chasing that pesky rabbit into the road, or maybe there is someone walking their unfriendly dog, Bane is a social butterfly he wants to come say hi, he doesn’t mean any harm but that doesn’t mean the other dog feels the same way, and my minute of distraction could have ended in tragedy and nobody wants that. 

Now that’s when I decided I needed to do something differently. I tried one of those perimeter collars, the inground wire ones and one with a giant bulky home base and I guess they worked, but it felt like he was being punished for no real reason. The cheaper collars lacked some of the early warning features that I had read about on Halo 5. 

And here we are! The initial setup was surprisingly easy. You download the app, and choose your collar, in this case it was the Halo 5 for me. Once selected the app will bring you through step by step instructions for getting your dog’s collar to the perfect fitment, from what size prongs to use, to how many fingers of free space to even showing you how to use the provided tools to cut off the extra material and fasten a very premium metal end clamp to button up the sizing. Not all dogs are the same size or have the same hair type and I love that the team at Halo was able to find a way to incorporate some individuality to each collar, making it the perfect fit for your dog. And honestly it was really easy to do and the instructions were extremely clear and easy to follow.

Now that I got the collar sized and all changed up it’s time to start with the rest of the set up. What I didn’t realize was that this was as much training for me as it was for him. There is a three tear Learning section that you have to complete to really get the full understanding of your collar and how to best utilize it for your dog. 

In the first section “Collar” you’ll find a welcome video where the dog whisperer himself Cesar Millan tells you a little bit about the collar and some backstory to it. Under the video are some sub categories where you will find that information on the fitment and then also collar acclimation as this is a new tool for yourself and the dog. 

Next you have a category called “Come Back”, in there you will have the tools and instruction on how to set up the sound that your dog reacts to, they have multiple sounds to choose from so you can help dial it in for the most accurate results. Once you’ve chosen a sound they will teach you how to use that sound, in the come back section it’s all about what your dog should do when it hears that sound, this is that pre warning i was talking about that the other collars i had didn’t use. Bane listens very well, so for him this was a great tool that he reacted to very quickly and in a very positive way. And also it gave me comfort knowing that when he backed away from the set boundaries he wasn’t being punished but just being reminded with a beeping sound from the collar that if he didn’t back up that a punishment may be coming. Once I set up the boundary around our lot ( with some extra space towards my one neighbor, they are buddies haha), I could actually relax a little knowing he wasn’t going to wander off into the wrong area or decide a squirrel across the road was worth a full sprint, and honestly the beep sound was not only something that he had to be trained to listen for but also myself, weather im cutting some wood or working in the yard or even under the car wrenching I hear that tone and immediately know that he is close to a perimeter and i should be on alert to what he is doing as well. Say you are inside the office or maybe had to run to the bathroom, the app has push notifications and can send you alerts in real time when boundaries are being breached or even when just a warning sound has gone off. 

The last training section is on Keep Away Training. In this section you will be able to learn more in depth on how the device uses gps to set your boundaries and help you teach your dog on the safe zone, the warning zone and the protection zone by following some perceived step by step instructions. Obviously all dogs act differently so you’ll have to adjust accordingly to your own doggo, but the baseline is there and makes you feel more in control with these easy to follow instructions. Also in this last section, you will get information on how to set up the virtual fences, which was extremely easy to do, I was able to set one up without the instructions but the instructions are so simple and to the point delivering you all the information you need without any extra filler, take the time to read it and get to know all that your collar has to offer! 

So for me this collar has honestly been great, I didn’t need the intense training aspect of it, but going through the steps it did give me some good pointers to use when working with bane on the boundaries and the warnings of the collar so even if you’re just looking for a wireless fence take the time to use it properly, you won’t regret it.  

I think more than ever people are turned off by electronics due to their complexity, and that’s one thing this amazing color was able to fix, they gave you a complex piece of equipment but made it extremely user friendly. I don’t have to worry about digging post holes or dealing with property lines. I just define my space digitally and adjust it when needed on the map. If we’re outside grilling or working, I can tighten the boundary. If I want to give him a bit more room while we’re out there, I can expand it in seconds, heck if we are going over to moms house or maybe even the park, you can create a separate fence and save it for other locations so that way you always have a safe space for your dog! 

That flexibility matters more than I expected. And maybe it will for you too, I can see it being especially useful for those who enjoy camping, or the outdoors as you can have that peace of mind anywhere you go. Or it’s just a great collar for just about any individual that values their dogs’ location, safety and behavior in and out of the house!

App Experience.

The app is honestly one of the strongest parts of the system, and probably my favorite thing about it by far. I hate nothing more than having a device that doesn’t work, cameras or gps trackers, they always seem to stop working when you need them most. Halo has found a way to eliminate that  and give you a beautiful home screen with these main features at the ready.

• Where your dog is in real time as well as your location in a satellite or a standard view.
• Battery status.
• Fences, you can easily choose what saved fence you want to pick as well as manage your fences right on the home screen. 
• Health, a section that saves your past walks showing you a path of where you have been and how long of a walk you went on.
• Notifications are placed perfectly on the bottom of the screen where you can 

For someone like me who’s usually juggling work, kids, projects, and everything else, being able to just pull out my phone and check on him is huge, and with notifications ranging from perimeter breaches and battery levels makes it even easier to manage. 

Beacons.

The Halo Beacons are small Bluetooth devices that work alongside the Halo Collar 5 to improve location accuracy in specific areas around your home. Simply place a zone beacon near locations like a doorway, gate, or dog bed, and the collar can recognize when your dog is nearby, helping create a smoother and more reliable experience than GPS alone. They’re especially useful for reducing false corrections in areas where GPS accuracy can vary. If you want to have more control without the app then you can purchase the remote beacon and call your dog back from anywhere with the push of a button, and they come with a nice design that allows you to place it on a standard keychain. 

Price. 

You can head straight on over to Halo collar directly and pick this up on sale for a low price of $524.00 with a  listed price of $599.00. On top of the initial purchase you can also find the subscription plan that starts at $9.99 a month. 

Battery Life.

The Halo 5 has a 2 day battery life, meaning if you do forget to plug it in overnight that it’s not the end of the world. The best way I came up with to use this collar on a regular basis and integrate it into our daily routine was just that, to create a routine and for us that is when its bed time and were turning off the lights for the lizard and making sure this kids devices are taken care of then we now just added plugging the dogs collar in while we are at it. So yeah the battery life isn’t the greatest, it does require you to plug it in, but so does every other training or perimeter collar. So what happens when you have a trip planned or want to go to the beach or the park, just plug it in before you leave, and maybe on the way there, after an hour you will have a fully charged collar again! 

Durability.

This is probably the most important part for me, and I mean if it were just a normal collar I wouldn’t think twice about it, but this is a high tech piece of equipment at a premium price that helps ensure my dog is as safe as can be. I don’t know about your dogs but Bane is not gentle on gear. He runs, rolls, scratches, loves to chase the kids on their dirtbikes and has ended up tumbling pretty good not paying attention to where he’s going haha but Im pretty happy to say that the collar has held up well through all of that. No slipping, no obvious wear or stretch marks on the strap, and the electronics haven’t given me any issues so far. Winter is coming and I’m curious how it will hold up to that.

Final Thoughts.

The Halo Collar 5 didn’t replace training, and it didn’t replace responsibility but it did change how I approached training and certainly helped with my peace of mind with the advanced GPS. With a strong-willed Pup in a tight living situation like ours, it gave me something I didn’t really have before and that is flexibility without losing control. Instead of worrying about fences, large home beacons or that fuzzy location reading, I can actually enjoy letting him be outside without constantly hovering. It’s not just about convenience. It’s about peace of mind and when you’ve got a dog that means as much to you as mine does, that matters more than anything.

At the end of the day, the Halo Collar 5 isn’t just a smart collar, it’s also an investment. For us, it became a way to give my dog freedom without giving up control and in our situation, that’s exactly what we needed.
