High-quality desk accessories that stand out
I have been a fan of Grovemade for years. I never pulled the trigger on purchasing a wool desk pad even though I had wanted one from Grovemade since I first saw the company way back when they started. My previous desk pad of choice has been the SteelSeries QcK Prism Cloth Gaming Mouse Pad XL with 2-Zone RGB Illumination. It seemed to be the right fit for me since I love RGB lighting. Unfortunately, you see every little piece of dust, lint, and dirt on its surface. It finally pushed me over the edge and I took the leap toward Grovemade.
The Wool Felt Desk Pad helps to bring style and structure to workspaces. It’s made with premium 3mm thick virgin Merino Wool Felt, which provides warmth and softness. Because it’s a natural material, it looks great with any type of desktop including laminate, wood grain, or even metal. There are four different sizes: small (24.75″ x 11″), medium (38″ x 11.5″), large (38.5″ x 26″), and extra-large (49″ x 26.5″). The small and medium options work well for keyboards and mouses while the larger sizes are better for the entire desk. The Wool Felt Desk Pad is not designed to be used as a writing surface, but it does work with optical mice. There are two color choices – dark and light – which are both variations of gray. Because the desk pads are made with natural materials there are some differences in color and appearance than what might be shown as an example. The Wool Felt Desk Pad is designed in Portland, Oregon, and made in the USA.
When I received my package, I was a bit shocked to find a handwritten letter that read, “Hi Nicholas, Thank you for your order! -EP”. I find this to be a lost art for companies. It’s refreshing it tells you that they inspected it that they care about the work they produce and not that they are slinging out as many as they can just for that dollar. It takes seconds but lasts forever and turns a one-time consumer into a lifelong fan of the brand.
Once I got past the nice note shown above, I took a minute to inspect the desk pad. It arrived rolled up and wrapped up with branded brown paper. I was very surprised at how thin this desk pad is. Since I don’t have a whole lot of experience with wool, I was concerned that it wasn’t going to hold up very well. As it turns out, it is made with such high-quality materials that the concern has been wiped from my mind.
I laid out the desk pad to find that it’s just as deep as my old RGB pad and about two inches longer than my old one. It’s just the right length for what I need since I keep my Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic TrackPad on it. Something I would pay big money for is if Grovemade ever did a partnership with a company like AUKEY or Steel Series and came out with an RGB wool desk pad. I know that sort of defeats the purpose of having a classic wool desk pad but I think it would ultimately look sharp.
I love this desk pad so much that I really only have two suggestions. First, I would probably add some weight to the edges so they sit flat easier when you unroll it and two, maybe add a non-slip material to the underside to help keep the desk pad from sliding as much. Now, on other styles of desks, there may not be a sliding issue, but my desk is a very smooth painted white top. This means that unless something is weighing down the desk pad, it slides around as I use it.
Grovemade makes some of the finest desk accessories in the business. From monitor risers to pen holders they are the go-to when you want to have quality gear spiffing up your desk. Do I miss my RGB lighting? Yes, very much so, but I also really enjoy the feel and high-end look that the Wool Felt Desk Pad gives me. So would I buy this desk pad again? Yes, I think I would. Is it expensive? Yes very much so but most quality items are and as that old saying goes, “You get what you pay for.” I am happy with this desk pad and think it’s going to help take my desk setup to a new level.
