GRID Studio creates eye-catching artwork that brings back the memories
I have been an iPhone user since day one, In-fact the first iPhone is the product that got me interested in writing tech reviews. Without this device, the world would be in a different place right now. So many advancements in everything from cellular service to medical devices have been made thanks to this little pocket computer.
Throughout the past 10 years, I’ve struggled with getting my office space set exactly how I want it. Finally, just a few months ago, I found the right set up and I’ve been struggling to find the right accessories to fill out the space. I’m a huge Star Wars fan so naturally, my Star Wars toys have a prominent place in my office. I’m also a fan of cartoons from the 1980s and so I have plenty of Funko Pops of figures from TV series such as G.I. Joe, Transformers, and He-Man.
One little spot above my desk has been plaguing me though. I felt like there was an empty space and I didn’t know what to fill it with. Thankfully, a wonderful opportunity to take a look at the Tech Art pieces from GRID Studio came up and it ended up being the ideal addition to my office. Not only did it fill the spot but it allows me to randomly look up and be inspired by what started it all.

While you may not be familiar with the name GRID Studio you have probably seen some of their work. GRID Studio creates some remarkable pieces of art that are made from deconstructed technology devices — such as the iPhone. This is what I ended up adding to my wall and what I want to tell you about today.
About GRID Studio
GRID Studio was founded in September 2020 in Shenzhen, China. The main group consists of only six people – who are all Apple fans. The art project started as a hobby.
One of our partners had the whim, after taking apart his equipment, handpainting and gluing the parts on paper, and he finally made an amazing piece of art! At first, this was just a hobby, but we thought it should be shared with more people who also love this, so that’s when we started our business.

The first art piece they made was the iPhone 4S, which is the last iPhone model announced while Steve Jobs was still alive (he died the day after the announcement). This makes the 4S an important monument in the Apple landscape. Apart from the original iPhone model (also known as iPhone 2G), the 4S is probably the most iconic iPhone model.
GRID Studio collects its devices from repair shops as well as collectors. All the parts they use in their creations are original to the device with the exception of batteries. They use fake batteries in the frames so that there is no danger of explosion or corrosion over time. At the time of writing this article, they currently have 10,000 devices on-hand for their art pieces. Many of those devices are Apple products.
Part of their mission is to keep these amazing pieces of technology alive – even if they are deconstructed. On GRID Studio’s website, they state that the revolutionary digital products that we’ve all grown up with are getting quiet and disappearing gradually. This is one of the reasons GRID art is so special. It keeps parts of our history front and center so we don’t forget where we came from.

Pricing and Availability
GRID Studio currently only sells its products through its website. They have a large variety of deconstructed devices (listed below). At this time, the prices range from $59.99 to $599.99 depending on the device you select.

My GRID Experience
A few weeks ago a special package arrived. I didn’t think much of it as Robyn, my fiancé and Mac Sources co-founder, went to the door to pick up the box from the delivery person. I asked her what came. She responded with, “A box.” This is the normal repartee that we go through every day when packages arrive. When she crossed the threshold into my office, she paused and got this devilish grin across her face.
“What is it?”
“Well, it’s from China. Do you really not know what this is?” I wasn’t thinking about it and since we get packages on a daily basis, I had forgotten to expect this extra special delivery.

“No, I really don’t know what it is.” She took great care in unwrapping the package so that she could do a reveal for me. GRID does an exceptional job with its packaging. It is part of the customer’s experience. Each GRID piece is wrapped with handmade gift wrap and stamped with a wax-type seal. There is even a decorative ribbon included completing the package.
When she slid the frame out from the wrapping paper, which, by the way, retained the shape of the frame even after the GRID art was removed, my jaw dropped. Honestly, the piece was better than I could have imagined. There is so much detail included in this gorgeous tear-down that I was still finding little touches days later.
One of my favorite details in this piece is the inclusion of the Mac Sources logo. The designers at GRID Studio added this in to personalize the piece for us. Some of the other standouts to me are the Steve Jobs signature at the bottom of the page. It emphasizes the quote, “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

At the top of the piece is the iPhone logo – complete with the Apple icon – with the subheading ‘Introduced: June 2007’ and ‘Apple reinvents the phone.’ Each part of the phone is thoughtfully and clearly labeled and there are measurements called out across the piece. It’s very well thought out and the layout is outstanding. Even though I had seen pictures of other GRID art online, seeing this one in person brought tears to my eyes.
The frame is really a shadowbox and it measures 13 x 13 x 1.8 inches. So, it will sit out almost 2 inches from your wall when it’s hung. The designers could have chosen something a bit slimmer, but I’m glad that they did not because this form gives it more of a 3D feel and brings a lot of life to a wall of flat art.
In addition to being a truly remarkable piece of wall art, GRID art is also a fantastic way to help the environment. GRID studio is pulling these retired devices out of the disposal stream and upcycling them into these pieces of art. To me, that is one more reason to invest in them.

Final Thoughts
While GRID Studio has many different pieces of art available, I selected the original iPhone. As an early adopter of the iPhone, I felt compelled to have this piece of history as a framed piece of art on my office wall. For me, the iPhone didn’t just give me a smartphone – it changed my life.
It led me to Apple products, which in turn, created the idea for Mac Sources, and also brought me and Robyn together (one of our first conversations was us bonding over the original iPad). So, having this amazing, one-of-a-kind piece of art on my wall definitely has special meaning to me and my life. The GRID art pieces are unique and give you a chance to have history on your wall.
