Grammarly for Mac
Grammarly's premium service is definitely recommended by this reviewer. The free service is a great place to start, but upgrading to the premium option can propel your writing to the next level. It's very easy to use the service. Grammarly offers multiple platforms to use on different operating systems. The service helps users to learn new writing skills and enhance the ones they already have.
- EASE OF USE
Grammarly Premium brings renewed confidence in your writing skills with the premium features it provides.
Writing with confidence has been a skill that I’ve been trying to develop over the past few years. For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with Language Arts as a subject. I used to think that I wasn’t a good speller or that I just wasn’t smart enough to figure out how to write with clarity. Now I know that I had a huge factor working against me during my formative years – dyslexia.
Around the time I was in 2nd grade, I was diagnosed with the reading disorder, which made it difficult for me to spell and sound out words. In addition to dyslexia, I’ve also developed hearing loss as I’ve gotten older, and that has made it harder for me to develop more advanced writing skills. Even though I frequently write for Mac Sources, I feel that it is lacking in certain areas, and I always have someone double-check my work because I lack the confidence to trust my writing.
I’ve been using Grammarly for many years now to assist with my spelling and grammar skills, but about a month ago, I decided to upgrade to Grammarly Premium in the hopes that my writing style might improve.

What is Grammarly?
Grammarly is a fantastic service that provides AI-powered writing assistance to users. The service helps users correct spelling and grammar mistakes and make their writing clear and concise for their intended audiences. To date, Grammarly’s technology helps over 30 million people and 30,000 teams communicate effectively wherever they write. Grammarly is a sophisticated system that can check the tone of a user’s work as well as provide a plagiarism check against writings found online.
Grammarly analyzes your writing – either that you are typing live or that you’ve provided to the app – and it checks it for any errors. The free version of the service offers assistance with basic writing skills such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling, while the premium version also offers suggestions about your actual writing style. One of the more remarkable features of Grammarly is the fact that it teaches the user. The system will not only notify the user of an error, but it will also give a quick lesson about why it is an error.
Grammarly as a program exists in two main utility types – an editor and a live writing assistant. Grammarly has developed these two main products to cover all the major operating systems available to its users. Since the mission of Grammarly is to improve lives by improving communication, they work to make sure their platform can work where its users do. Grammarly is available across more than 500,000 applications.
Here are all the ways that a user can access Grammarly (as of publishing this article).
- Grammarly for Your Desktop (includes Grammarly for Mac and Grammarly for Windows)
- Grammarly Browser Extension (includes Grammarly for Chrome, Grammarly for Safari, Grammarly for Firefox, Grammarly for Edge, Grammarly for Google Docs)
- Grammarly for MS Office (Add-on for Microsoft Word)
- The Grammarly Keyboard (includes Grammarly for iPhone, Grammarly for iPad, Grammarly for Android)
- The Grammarly Editor (online)
About Grammarly – the Company
Grammarly as an organization has the mission to improve lives by improving communication. I like that for so many reasons, but especially because it’s so simple and it just speaks to me. That is a daily struggle for me and I started using Grammarly premium specifically so that I could communicate better.
At Grammarly, we strive to help people understand one another, whenever and wherever they communicate in English. Every day, 30 million people and 30,000 teams around the world rely on our real-time suggestions to strengthen their writing and say what they really mean.
Grammarly uses advanced machine learning based on natural language processing (NLP) research to deliver its product offerings. The software company is user-centric and strives to ensure its users’ privacy and security.
Keeping users’ data secure is our top priority, and our safeguards include data encryption, a secure cloud architecture, and continuous monitoring of our systems. Grammarly’s security controls are validated by enterprise-grade compliances and certifications from external auditors, and we comply with privacy regulations and frameworks.
How do you use Grammarly?
Using Grammarly is actually incredibly easy. The most difficult part is deciding what devices you want to use it on and what plan you will need to accomplish your goals. Getting started with Grammarly is free. The first step in the process is to sign up for a free account. This only requires an email address and password. Once you have your account set up all the Grammarly products you use will be connected together.
I did notice a strange anomaly with this overview screen. I had the Browser Extension installed, but this screen kept giving me the option to install it. It’s just a minor glitch, and I hope that Grammarly finds a fix for it soon.
While you can certainly download all the apps for your various devices, I would suggest starting at the heart of Grammarly at grammarly.com. Here you can register for an account and view your account dashboard along with using the Grammarly Editor. Grammarly can identify your web browser and computer operating system from grammarly.com and it will suggest versions for you to download based on that information. I found this to be quite helpful because wading through their list of products can be tedious.
Once you have your account set up there are two ways to use Grammarly. You have the option of grabbing text you’ve already drafted and dropping it into the Editor using either copy/paste or uploading a document (Grammarly Editor currently only accepts Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), OpenOffice (.odt), .txt, and .rft files). After Grammarly analyzes the text, it will make suggestions for edits in several areas – correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery (the premium version provides advanced suggestions and provides access to the plagiarism check). It’s then the user’s job to go back and approve the edit suggestions.
If you prefer to have corrections made while you type, then the live assistant is probably best for you. This utility takes many different forms – the Browser Extension, Grammarly for Your Desktop, Grammarly for MS Office, and Grammarly Keyboard (mobile). Even though each of these versions is slightly different in execution, they all provide the same all-in-one writing assistant that works as you do. The process is very similar to the editor. As you type, Grammarly will pop up with suggestions. You accept or dismiss them depending on the suggestion.
Grammarly provides the user with an overall performance score upon the completion of the initial analysis. This score is based on how many corrections there are in the document. While you hope the person using Grammarly is being diligent and paying attention to the suggestions, it is possible to click through all the suggestions – agreeing or dismissing – and get a 100 as a score. And, unless you are actually paying attention to the suggestions, Grammarly isn’t going to be a benefit to you.
After you’ve been using Grammarly for a while, the system starts to learn your writing style and the system even provides you with insights about your usage of the Grammarly system. Grammarly Insights 2.0 monitors your trends, provides you with badges based on your achievements and alerts you when you reach certain records with productivity and vocabulary.
How much is Grammarly premium and is it worth it?
Whether you have Grammarly premium or the free version, the system works the same. So there is no learning curve if you upgrade to premium from free. The upgrade to premium basically just unlocks additional suggestions to your writing projects. Grammarly Premium service starts at $12/month. This price is available if you commit to a 1-year term and pay for the entire year in advance. There is a quarterly billing option as well (one-time $60 payment) and a month-to-month billing option ($30/month).
The table below outlines the features shared between the two versions and additional features you receive with the premium plan. The awesome thing about Grammarly Premium is that it is attached to your account – not the app you are using. So if you subscribe, the features are available across any of the apps you are using.
|Grammar, spelling, and punctuation
|Grammar, spelling, and punctuation
|Consistency in spelling and punctuation
|Clarity-focused sentence rewrites
|Lively sentence variety
After learning about the cost and the feature set, you might wonder, “Does it make sense to pay for the Grammarly Premium?” The truth is that the free version is pretty complete. It does a great job with basic writing skills. That version does an excellent job of catching basic mistakes, but Grammarly Premium does an even better. There are lot more checks that the premium version does relating to grammar, sentence structure, and context.
In short, Grammarly Premium is more than just a spelling/grammar check. It makes suggestions to help make your writing more engaging, too. One of the most incredible features within Grammarly Premium is being able to set goals for your writing. When you start a new document within the editor, you can select your writing goals according to audience, formality, domain, and intent.
For example, let’s say you are writing a cover letter to go along with a resume. You would want your audience to be set to either knowledgeable or expert, with formality set to formal, the domain set to business, and the intent to be to convince or inform. Grammarly Premium will then provide feedback on the tone of your writing to make sure it stays within those limits.
So, is Grammarly Premium worth it – in my opinion? Yes – absolutely. For me, Grammarly Premium is like putting hearing aids on for the first time and being able to hear birds after years of not hearing them. It’s renewed my sense of self-worth because I finally have confidence in my writing, and I don’t feel like I have to ask for help.
How Grammarly Premium has helped me
As I said, I’ve been a free user of Grammarly for many years. I have several variations installed (Grammarly for Mac, Grammarly for Safari, and Grammarly Keyboard & Editor) and I’ve been able to see real progress in my writing skills in the month since I started my subscription.
I’ve found my writing becoming more and more succinct and intelligent-sounding. For a long time, I’ve had someone read over everything I’ve written – even things as short as Tweets – to make sure what I mean to say is what I wrote. However, since I’ve been using Grammarly premium, I haven’t felt like I’ve needed that extra set of eyes on everything I write.
Even though I utilize Grammarly on my laptop – especially in Safari – I think I get the most use out of the Keyboard feature on my iPhone and iPad. Just like Grammarly for Your Desktop, it’s always there. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve typed a quick response to an email or a text message, and just before I hit ‘send,’ Grammarly tells me to make a change. It’s honestly been a lifesaver for me.
I honestly didn’t think Grammarly Premium would have this big of an impact on me, but it has. I use it on emails, Tweets, and when I’m writing articles. The little mistakes – you know, the ones that you don’t catch because you’ve read something 50 times – are caught by Grammarly. The program makes suggestions to parts I think sound great, and more often than not, Grammarly is right.
There have been many times that Grammarly has made suggestions that I never would have thought of and it’s made the writing sound better. Grammarly has definitely made me take a second and sometimes even a third look at what I’m writing to make it the best it can be. Grammarly has helped me to focus on the parts of my writing skills that need the most improvement and it’s brought me renewed confidence at the same time. It has really made me adjust my way of writing – which was the goal the entire time.
I still feel there is a need for a human editor when it comes to reviewing large pieces of content. While Grammarly does an excellent job of catching mistakes and making suggestions, sometimes it doesn’t quite catch nuances in writing. As the user, you need to check Grammarly’s suggestions. Read suggestions out loud. Sometimes you can hear a mistake better than seeing one.
Grammarly and Ukraine
I want to call out one final note about Grammarly as an organization before I close this review out. If you visit their website or look at their apps in the app stores, you will see that Grammarly has ceased providing their software to Russia and Belarus in response to the conflict in Ukraine. Grammarly’s co-founders are from Ukraine, as are many of their team members. Here is the message they have outlined on their website.
Grammarly stands with Ukraine
We are a company with a deep connection to Ukraine. Grammarly was founded in Ukraine; our co-founders are from Ukraine, and we have many team members who call Ukraine home. The Russian attacks are horrific atrocities and have caused immense suffering, fear, and heartbreak.
To our colleagues, family, and friends in Ukraine, please know that we stand with you, completely and wholeheartedly. To all of Ukraine, we stand with you and are sending aid. To everyone else, we ask you to declare your support for the people of Ukraine, who continue to resist the unprovoked Russian invasion.
In addition to blocking access to their products, Grammarly has committed funds to humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
I love things that work, and Grammarly just works. It’s honestly like magic. You start the program. Log into your account and let it do its thing. It’s always there when you need it and out of the way when you don’t. While I wasn’t sure if I would actually need Grammarly premium, I’m glad I took the plunge and became a subscriber to the service. I am eager to see what Grammarly products are released next.
