When I installed my first standing desk, I didn’t think the lack of storage was an issue. Then, I upgraded to my current L-shaped standing Desk, and myself in need of just a bit of extra storage space. While standing file cabinets can assist with this issue, I really wanted something at my desk. So, I looked for a heavy-duty drawer that would not only hold my most valuable items but also provide the aesthetic I was hoping for. That’s what led me to the Flexispot S01 Under Desk Drawer.

User Experience

The Flexispot S01 Under Desk Drawer doesn’t have a remarkable unboxing experience. The container was more like a shipping carton than a retail box. Upon removing all the parts of the drawer, I found that some assembly was required in addition to installation. It’s nothing major. The hangers of the drawer are attached to the body of the drawer by inserting screws into the bottom of the drawer body. This creates the shelf space on top of the drawer once it’s installed on your desk. The only really awkward thing about this is that it creates a very heavy assembly to hold up when you are attempting to install it.

While we are on that subject, installation of this drawer — because of its weight (15 pounds) and size/shape — is not the easiest thing to accomplish. And, it’s darned near impossible if you are attempting to do it alone. There is a note in the manual that reads, “Note: Fun for two people.” HA! It was a headache. There is a template included to assist with the drill holes, but the problem with it is that it’s only good for the width of the drawer — not the length. So, how are you supposed to judge where the end of the drawer is on your desk? Flexispot could make this LOT easier for people to install by including a template that is the correct length and width of the drawer.

Since we were installing this drawer on a desk that was already built, we had to lay under the desk in order to find the right placement for it. In the manual, it’s suggested that an alternate method for installing the drawer is to flip your desk over. This is a good option for people who are in the process of building their desk — not for a desk that is already put together.

So, my partner and I lay beneath the desk. One of us held it in place while the other made the marks where the screws needed to go. Then we pulled the drawer out and drilled the pilot holes for the screws. Then we would put the drawer back into place and secure it with the screws. While it’s not difficult per se, it’s certainly not easy either. I would deem an easy install to be something that one person can do without assistance. With that definition, this drawer was not easy to install.

Now, even though I found the installation process hard to bear, I think the build quality and design of this drawer are outstanding. It is heavy-duty and the shelf on top is ingenious. Some of the items I wanted to keep in the drawer were too long by just a fraction of an inch. So they fit perfectly on top of the shelf. I also love that the drawer can be locked. This is very handy especially if this is installed in a public office space.

The drawer is very sturdy and it has a very modern look to it. I thought it might be hanging too low and was concerned that it might cause me to hit my legs on it. Fortunately, I was able to justify it all the way to one of the edges of my desk so that I could avoid it. It’s a solid drawer and if I did whack my knees on it, I would imagine that would hurt quite a bit.
